Create Your Own Country and Constitution
- Summary
-
Have you ever wanted to be in charge of a country? In this class, you get to be king (or president, prime minister, or commander in chief) for a week! Join us to learn the fundamental building blocks needed to take your new nation from idea to (imaginary) body politic.
Course Description: In Create Your Own Country and Constitution, students will use their imagination to design a brand-new country in a fictional land on Earth or a futuristic Mars, using our own U.S. Constitution as a blueprint. They will provide the background of why the country was created and give the design of the flag, designate a symbol, and write lyrics for a national anthem. They will create a simple constitution to bring their ideas to life of what principles the country should hold dear, all while having fun!

The project could utilize a simple notebook and/or any suitable materials to express your creativity, such as markers, art supplies, a poster board, fabric, etc. Through class discussion, brainstorming, and independent work, students will create a project over four classes. The project will consist of creating a fictional country on Earth or a futuristic colonized Mars, the backstory of the country’s formation, and the following components: the blueprint of a flag, a symbol, a motto, lyrics for a national anthem, and a simple Constitution. The students will submit their project through a PDF or pictures of their work. Students may also choose to submit a video presentation of their project. Students should spend approximately one hour outside of each class in preparing the project, for a total of four hours of independent work.
