The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings: Middle Earth Adventures, Part Two
Live course taught by Greg Pyne for Spring 2025 High School Modern Literature
Summary

Continue with Part Two in discovering the spiritual depth and moral insights that make Tolkien's storytelling a unique and enriching experience for young minds. We will embark on an enchanting journey through Middle Earth and explore the profoundly Catholic themes woven into these timeless works of literary brilliance.

Course Description: JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and his epic saga The Lord of the Rings defined a whole genre of literature in the mid-20th century and continues to inspire and instruct its readers in genuine and faith-filled adventure.  The depth of Tolkien’s writing is an unparalleled treasure trove as an aid and inspiration for the Christian journey.

This course will engage in a close reading of Tolkien’s stories, with an emphasis on

– Tolkien’s understanding of myth, language, and his Catholic Faith, which led to the creation of Lord of the Rings (and even to the conversion of CS Lewis!).

– How the thematic elements of Trust, Friendship, Power, Sacrifice, and Honor illuminate both the characters in Tolkien’s work and the reader’s journey in their Catholic Faith.

– The impact of Tolkien’s writing on contemporary society.

“End? No, the journey doesn't end here... The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.” Gandalf from JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings
