Course Description: General Psychology provides an introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. The course introduces students to fundamental principles in neuroscience, perception, cognition, learning, memory, motivation, personality, abnormality, and social psychology. The surveyed principles prepare students to think and reflect critically about people.

** Parents should note that mature topics will be touched upon in Developmental Psychology (Chapter 9, Weeks 5 & 6) and Personality (Chapter 11, Weeks 11 & 12). These topics include gender, sexuality, and Freud’s psychosexual theory.

Course Goals:

  • Understand major theories of psychology.

  • Be able to think critically about psychology.

  • Be familiar with different domains of psychology.

  • Be able to apply psychological research to everyday experiences.

  • Communicate information and ideas about psychology.

Special notes

This is Part One of a two-part course. Students are expected to register for Part Two offered in the Spring semester. There is a writing component.

Parts One and Two of this course are part of the Benedictine College program for college credit. They align with PSYC-1000 for 3 college credits. Homework

Students are expected to do the assigned readings and watch any assigned videos. There will be one assignment and one forum each week, and one quiz every other week. In addition, students will complete a midterm exam after 12 weeks. Expect to spend 4 hours per week outside of class meetings.

Fees

For all 12 classes: $237 if you register on or before July 15; $257 if you register after July 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $25 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Kristi Moore, Ph.D.

Dr. Kristi Moore earned her PhD in Educational and Developmental Psychology from the University of Florida and is currently an Associate Professor and Program Director for the Applied Psychology graduate program at Angelo State University.

She specializes in child and adolescent development and learning and motivation. Dr. Moore has been teaching psychology since 2009.

She enjoys fulfilling her vocation as a wife and homeschool mother to her four children. Dr. Moore and her husband are licensed foster parents in Florida.
