Summary

 Hone your writing and critical thinking while mastering over 350 vocabulary words from college and graduate word lists and Advanced Placement (AP) writing, and learn top study skills for remembering vocabulary (and more!).

Special Notes: This course is scheduled during several different slots in the spring semester.

This is Part Two of a 2-part course. Students are welcome to join us midyear if there are open seats and they have the prerequisite.

How to get the most out of the Vocabulary and Writing, Part Two (HS 10-2) course

  • Read the course details below.

  • Prepare a notebook for note-taking and homework. Students -- be sure to take notes during class!

  • Students, begin the course by:

    • LIVE CLASS Students - Coming to the first live Class session on the scheduled date and time.

    • Unlimited Access / Recorded Students - Clicking on "Recording" and watch Professor Brown’s lecture for Class One.

  • Review any supplemental materials (videos or readings)

  • Complete any Quiz(zes) or homework assigned. The computer will automatically grade the quizzes.

    • *Note* If taking the course in Recorded format, the quiz will reset if someone else in the family takes it, so make sure the grade is recorded by a parent.

  • If you need to review, watch the recording and/or go over the PowerPoint again.

  • Repeat until all 14 classes are complete.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end of this page (to be filled in for your records). Homeschool Connections does not provide record keeping

Mondays, January 6 to April 14, 2025. No class March 3 (mid-semester break).

Duration Per Class: 55 minutes

Prerequisite: Required: High School Essential Writing 1: Punctuation and Grammar I (HS 9-1) and High School Simplified Writing 1: Strong Foundational Writing Skills (HS 9-2).

Recommended: High School Essential Writing 2: Excellent Paragraph and Essay Writing (HS 9-3) and High School Simplified Writing 2: Beyond the Five-Paragraph Essay (HS 9-4).

Prerequisites can also be taken as a recorded course through Unlimited Access. Alternative prerequisite: a passing Punctuation & Grammar Assessment (only) from the Aquinas Writing Advantage Assessment service.

Suggested Grade Level: 10th grade or high school students who meet the prerequisite requirements.

Suggested Credit: One (1) full semester Vocabulary & Writing, Writing, or English

Fee: For all 14 classes: $257 if you register on or before November 15, $277 if you register after Nov. 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

Course Description: In this second (Part 2) of two successive courses, you’ll continue learning advanced concepts associated with over 350 more upper-level vocabulary words necessary for success in all high school writing and literature courses, Advanced Placement (AP) English Language courses, and college-level writing. Coursework will be focused on the critical thinking and writing practice needed for your future success, and each week, you’ll learn tips and how-to’s for learning the words with comprehension and memory, as well as use the words in writing. Because vocabulary is an indicator of success in college and for the best communication practices in adult life, if you want to be prepared for college courses and beyond, this course is for you.

Class 3: Critical Reading; Literary Forms & Genres I

Class 4: Literary Forms and Genres II

Class 5: Themes in Writing

Class 6: Rhetoric & Literary Techniques

Class 7: Rhetoric, Figures of Speech, and Devices I

Class 8: Rhetoric, Figures of Speech, and Devices II

Class 9: Narration; Dissecting Passages of Text I

Class 10: Description; Dissecting Passages of Text II

Class 11: Illustration, Exemplification, and Highly Effective Essays

Class 12: Comparison & Contrast in Writing

Class 13: Process Analysis & Context

Class 14: Division & Classification; Writing Cogent, Organized Essays

Course Materials: Required Book: EB Conroy’s Simplified Vocabulary Guide may be ordered at http://amzn.to/2FKGXDC. Microsoft Word or the ability to convert a document to a Word-compatible document is required. If you do not own Microsoft Word, you can use a system such as Google Docs that converts to Word documents FREE.

Homework: Studying for tests on vocabulary words, for identification and use. Students will take weekly in-system quizzes (graded automatically) and complete weekly writing assignments that make your writing stronger and use the new vocabulary (graded by the instructor).

About Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA


Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA, is the creator and Director of the Aquinas Writing Advantage program. She is the author of eighteen (18) books (including Simplified Writing 101: Top Secrets for College Writing Success) and has been a professional author, editor, and university professor for over 30 years.

Erin designed the online writing program for three universities and taught at Patrick Henry College (writing, research); Cornerstone University (multiple writing courses, interpersonal communication, management and leadership, and critical thinking); and led the General Education Communications curriculum development (writing, communications, critical thinking) for Western Governors University.

Professor Brown has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing/Genre Fiction from Western Colorado University, a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Rehabilitation, and a Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Education from Western Michigan University. Professor Brown was a homeschooling parent for 34 years and homeschooled 10 children. She lives in Michigan and enjoys writing Science Fiction and Fantasy books in coffee shops, speaking online and at conferences, and walking her dogs.

About Sara Keefe

Mrs. Sara Keefe earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Mrs. Keefe brings nearly 30 years of experience teaching in traditional classrooms, homeschooling co-ops, and working as a private tutor both in person and online. She is currently homeschooling the youngest of her four sons and is active in her parish, St. Matthew Catholic Church.

Outside of class, Mrs. Keefe enjoys baking and experiencing the outdoor beauty of Northern Michigan, where she and her family reside.

Jamie Salvucci

Jamie is a Jewish convert to Catholicism. She converted in 1998 when she was in college studying music education. She met her husband during her senior year and they married in 2003. They live in northeast PA with our 5 wonderful children whom they have always homeschooled. In my spare time she enjoy acting as chauffeur, lead cook and bottle washer, chief medical liaison, curriculum advisor, and part-time jungle gym. She also love reading, knitting, not killing my sour dough starter, and coffee.
