Learn the anatomy and physiology of our senses, with a deeper look in this high-interest science course through interesting videos and engaging in labs that align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for middle school life science.

Course description:

Learn about the five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Students will learn both anatomy and physiology through learning resources and labs. This course is taught in a flipped-classroom format. Students are expected to gain familiarity with the assigned media (print, audio, video) and complete work prior to viewing the class. This course aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for middle school life science.

Outline

Course outline:

Class 1: Introduction to how the senses work

Class 2: Touch

Class 3: Taste and Smell

Class 4: Sight

Class 5: Hearing

Class 6: Senses Project Presentations

Materials

All learning materials are provided. Web camera and /or microphone use is strongly encouraged!

The following supplies are needed for the labs:

  • Toothpicks

  • Glue

  • 3x5 index card cut in half or a business card

  • Colored pencils and paper

  • Blindfold

  • Flavor samples

    • Salty water

    • Sugary water

    • Lemon juice (sour)

    • Onion juice or tonic water (bitter)

    • Meat stock or cooked mushrooms (umami)

  • Containers with snap-on lids

  • Stopwatch (available as a phone app)

  • Samples of strong odors, one from each category

    • Food extracts (lemon, almond, etc.)

    • Spices (cinnamon, cumin, etc.)

    • Fresh ground coffee

    • Perfume or cologne

  • Foods to compare taste. Baby food (several fruit or vegetable varieties) or jellybeans work well.

  • Ear plugs (you can use a cotton ball coated with white petrolatum)

  • Something that makes a constant sound (a ticking watch, an alarm on a mobile phone, etc. A mobile phone works well because the sound level is adjustable.)

  • Measuring tape

  • Something to mark the ground/floor (tape, chalk, erasable marker)


Homework

Students are expected to spend approximately 60 minutes after each class in completing each lab, the learning activities, and working on the final project.

Fees

For all 6 classes: $82 if you register on or before April 15; $102 if you register after April 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $25 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Kris Correira, DSc, MA Theology, PA-C

Dr. Correira has been a physician assistant for over 30 year working in family practice and emergency medicine. She also has been teaching life science, biology, and medically-related courses for over 20 years for middle school through college-level students both in the classroom and online. Dr. Correira enjoys engaging students in active learning and taking different approaches to standard material.

Dr. Correira is a Doctor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies concentrating in in Educational Leadership. She holds a Master of Arts in Theology concentrating in Bioethics from Holy Apostles College and Seminary, and is certified by the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Healthcare Bioethics. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Computer Science from Wellesley College.

Dr. Correira homeschooled her three now grown sons.

Christine Kupovits

Christine is a cradle Catholic, wife and mother from Michigan. She has 2 teenage boys that are homeschooled and has been married for over 20 years. Besides monitoring she is a small group leader for the junior high youth group at her parish. She enjoys bike rides, reading (especially mysteries) and soccer. Christine has a degree in radiation therapy and also a theology degree from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. Her favorite saints are St. Joseph, St. Joan of Arc, St. Gemma and St. Rita.
