Summary

How did people in the ancient past dress and what did their clothing say about them?  How did they make their clothing and how was it perfectly adapted to their local environment?  What sorts of tools and weapons did they use to help them survive in a world with harsh conditions and rival tribes and peoples? Let's delve into the details about daily life and livelihood to make history come alive in the imagination.

Course Description: This is part two of a history course that delves into the cultural material lives of the ancient peoples in the Near East, Mediterranean and the Ancient Northern worlds. We will look at how fabrics and textiles were developed, how raw materials were gathered and processed and how ancient costumes of the different peoples developed. We will also take an introductory look at unique tools and weapons and how they were used. A primary goal will be to emphasize how the clothing, tools and weapons of the past cultures were anything but clumsy–rather they were an effective expression of human nature’s ability to create. Expect a lot of visuals and descriptions that ignite the imagination–helping history become more exciting and relatable to students.
