Course Description: Explore the historical, mythical, and contemporary meaning of the last, great English epic poem.  Join Mr. Pyne as he unpacks this legend of King Alfred against the warring Vikings in this eight-week course. Release your inner warrior!

Course Materials: The Ballad of the White Horse by G. K. Chesterton, Seton Press edition (available from www.setonbooks.com or www.chesterton.org.

Homework: Weekly reading of a primary text is expected, as well as supplied secondary sources (usually through PDF files provided free by the instructor), which expound on particular themes or ideas presented in the text. Weekly automated quizzes for immediate feedback.

About Gregory Pyne

Gregory Pyne teaches AP Literature and Composition and Senior British Literature and Writing at West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida. In 2010, he was honored with a scholarship to Oxford University, where he studied Medieval and Victorian Literature at Exeter College.

A devotee of GK Chesterton, he is a founding member of the Central Florida Chesterton Society and is a proud member of the American Chesterton Society. He is also a founding board member of Chesterton Academy Orlando.

Previously Anglican, he converted to the Catholic Church and was received during Easter Vigils in 2017. He is husband to Raine and a father of three boys: Rowan, Brennan, and Corin.

Varying the quote just a little, he agrees with CS Lewis that “You can never get a cup of coffee big enough or a book long enough to suit me.” He has been known to wear a kilt and carry a sword and shield, as needed.
