We all can see what is going on around us but we don’t always see how contemporary events affect us in the long term. In this course, students will see the whole picture to get a historicized and critical conceptualization of recent history.

How to get the most out of Contemporary U.S. History (1988 - 2016) with Phillip Campbell:

  • First, read the course materials below before the first class meeting.

  • Then have a notebook ready and available for class notes each live session.

  • Read assignments before class meetings

  • Watch that week’s recording if you need to revisit information from our live session.

  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that week.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Special notes: All course materials provided FREE by the instructor. Due to the popularity of this course, it is offered twice this semester. Choose the time that works best for your family. Includes a writing component.

Total classes: 13

Duration per class: 55 minutes
Prerequisite: None. However, Modern U.S. History: 1865-2000 (live Fall 2023), and Modern European History: 1789-1991 (recorded, Unlimited Access) are strongly recommended.

Suggested grade level: 11th to 12th grade. However, 9th to 10th graders with above-average reading skills can be successful as well. No middle school students please.
Suggested credit: One full semester American History

Course description: This final course in Mr. Campbell's U.S. History series follows the fortunes of the United States from its position of unrivaled global supremacy at the end of the Cold War, through the boom of the 90s and into the post-9/11 world. This class will help students understand contemporary national and global events in light of the historic and cultural shifts of the past 25 years.

Week 9: The Obama Revolution and Reaction
Week 10: The Surveillance State
Week 11: The March of Liberalism
Week 12: The Age of Trump
Week 13: Crossroads of America

Course materials: FREE primary source materials will be provided electronically by the instructor.

Homework: Weekly reading assignments, weekly quizzes, and weekly short essay questions. Estimated 2 hours per week.

Phillip Campbell holds a BA in European History from Ave Maria University and a certificate in Secondary Education through Madonna University. He taught history and Scripture for the St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program for ten years and is the author of the popular ” Story of Civilization” series by TAN Books. Mr. Campbell has also been published by The Catholic Textbook Project, Ave Maria Press, Our Sunday Visitor, Arx Publishing, and Arouca Press and his articles have appeared in online and print journals such as the St. Austin Review, New Oxford Review, and New Liturgical Movement.
