How to get the Most out of Botany with Christine Hamilton:

  • First, read the course details below.

  • Prepare a notebook for note taking and homework.

  • For each week start by:

    • Reading the assigned chapter.

    • Write the vocabulary terms in your notebook.

  • After reading the chapter and writing the vocab, click on the "Recording" and watching the lecture for Class One.

  • Reference the PowerPoint Presentation as needed.

  • Review supplemental materials (videos and readings).

  • Complete the assignment(s). Turn it into your parent for grading.

  • If you need review, go back and watch the recording again and/or go over the PowerPoint.

  • Repeat until all 8 classes are complete.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records

  • Grade is assigned by the parent. Make sure to recorded the given grade as HSC does not provide record keeping.

Total Classes: 8

Prerequisite: Basic science knowledge.

Suggested Grade Level: 9th to 12th grade

Suggested Credit: ⅔ semester of Botany or Science. Take Health Science in the spring for full credit (or see additional “course materials” below).

Course Description: Not only is botany fun, it is an important subject to learn. Plants play an integral role in the wellbeing of the human race. Think about plant use in pharmaceuticals, fuel, industrial & household chemicals, paper, essential oils, and so on. This is a semester-long course that introduces students to the plant kingdom and related ideas. It will directly prepare students for biology and college-level botany courses.

Course materials: Required: Introductory Plant Biology 10th Edition. Available inexpensively used (ISBN-13: 978-0073101750 / ISBN-10: 0073101753). Colored pencils, pens, paper, and a composition book.

  1. Class One - What is Plant Biology?/The Nature of Life

  2. Class Two - Cells

  3. Class Three - Tissues, Roots, Soils and Stems

  4. Class Four - Leaves, Flowers, Fruits and Seeds

  5. Class Five - Water in Plants

  6. Class Six - Metabolism and Growth

  7. Class Seven - Plant Names and Classifications

  8. Class Eight - Ecology and Biomes

Homework: Expect to spend approximately 2 hours outside of class each week reviewing vocabulary, reading, drawing, and completing quizzes. Quizzes are graded by the computer for immediate feedback. Students will create a keepsake book of their plant drawings.

About Christine Hamilton, PhD

Christine Hamilton is a graduate of Ohio University, with a BS in Biomedical Engineering and MS in Healthcare Administration, and NYU with a PhD in Public Health. She is VIRTUS trained in Protecting God’s Children and taught third grade PSR for her parish. Dr. Hamilton is also a homeschooling mother of two.
