Course Description: Medicine, Invention, and Technology in the Middle Ages is a fresh look at medieval history through the lens of science. Too often the medieval period is depicted as one of ignorance, superstition, and technological backwardness. This class will acquaint students with many valuable scientific advances of the Middle Ages and demonstrate that the medieval era was actually a time of dynamic discovery and innovation.

Class 3: The Waterwheel
Class 4: Military Engineering
Class 5: Miscellaneous Medieval Inventions
Class 6: Astronomy and Astrology
Class 7: Alchemy and Chemistry
Class 8: The Mechanical Clock
Class 9: Gothic Architecture
Class 10: Medieval Biology
Class 11: Medieval Medicine
Class 12: The Scientific Community
Course Materials: All course materials will be provided by the instructor.
Homework: Homework will consist in readings and automated online quizzes. The estimated homework commitment per week is 2 hours.

Phillip Campbell
Phillip Campbell holds a BA in European History from Ave Maria University and a certificate in Secondary Education through Madonna University. He taught history and Scripture for the St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program for ten years and is the author of the popular ” Story of Civilization” series by TAN Books. Mr. Campbell has also been published by The Catholic Textbook Project, Ave Maria Press, Our Sunday Visitor, Arx Publishing, and Arouca Press and his articles have appeared in online and print journals such as the St. Austin Review, New Oxford Review, and New Liturgical Movement.
