Course Description: This course is the second in a series Math Essentials: Everything You need to Ace High School Math. It is designed for students who struggle with middle school math concepts or those who want to make sure they have all that they need to succeed in High School Math. Each class will focus on one of the parts of the relationship between percent, ratios, and proportions. Students will be given one worksheet each class to complete before the next class.  Students will grade the worksheets together in the next class; to ensure mastery before moving on to the next topic. Grades are determined by participation and completion.

Course outline:

Class 1: Ratios

Class 2: Unit Rate and Unit Price

Class 3: Proportions

Class 4: Unit Conversions

Class 5: Percent Word Problems

Class 6: Interest, Tax, Discounts, and Markups

Class 7: Rate of Change

Class 8: Tables and Ratios

Course Materials: All materials are provided by the instructor

Homework: One worksheet is assigned each class period to be completed before the next class. Expect to spend approximately 40 minutes on homework each day.

Answer Key: An answer key booklet is included with this course.

About Jane Hoeft

 Jean Hoeft holds a BA from the University of Michigan in Mathematics Education and an MA from Marygrove University in Instruction & Curriculum.

Mrs. Hoeft taught math for Whitmore Lake Public Schools for 27 years. During that time, she served on several committees to analyze teacher training and find solutions for improvement. She’s also worked with the Women in Engineering Project at the University of Michigan and was written up in the Ann Arbor News for her technology class and her students’ magnetic levitation vehicles.

Mrs. Hoeft helped develop the curriculum for the technology education certification at Eastern Michigan University. She has taught the confirmation class at her Catholic parish for 20-plus years and sings in the church choir.

Mrs. Hoeft loves gardening, sudoku puzzles, raising chickens, reading, knitting, and everything Catholic.
