Help your college-bound student discover God's creation at the atomic level in this rigorous, college-prep Chemistry course. Learn about Matter and Change, Scientific Measurement, Atomic Structures, the Periodic Table, Compounds, Formulas, and more!

How to get the most out of Chemistry, Part One with Mrs. Kathy Dutton:

  • First, read the course materials below before the first class meeting.

  • Bring to every live class: a notebook and writing instrument (take notes), a calculator, your textbook, and the willingness to participate and learn.

  • For each live class, a working mic is mandatory!

Total Classes: 27

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes)

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra I, completion or concurrent enrollment with Algebra II is highly recommended (available Live or through Unlimited Access).  Middle School Physical Science is helpful.

Suggested Grade Level: 11th to 12th grade or advanced 10th grade

Suggested Credit: One full semester of Chemistry or Science

Instructor: Kathy Dutton

Course Description:  We will study God's creation at the atomic level and discover how marvelous it is. This is a rigorous, college-prep Chemistry course. Over both semesters, we will cover a wide range of topics, including the Structure of Matter, States of Matter, Chemical Reactions, Stoichiometry, Equilibrium, and Thermochemistry. We will also consider how Chemistry is important in our daily lives.

There will be Two tracks offered to students. You may choose one:

  1. Chemistry – This is the classic Chemistry class that most students will opt for.

  2. Honors Chemistry – When students on the Chemistry track earn enough extra credit, they have completed enough challenging material to list this course as Honors Chemistry. This is designed for academically gifted students or those who have a desire to complete more rigorous work. The extra credit is available to all students even if they are not attempting Honors Chemistry.

Course Outline:

Topic 1:  Matter and Change

Topic 2:  Scientific Measurement

Topic 3:  Atomic Structure

Topic 4:  Periodic Table

Topic 5:  Chemical Quantities

Topic 6:  Thermochemistry

Topic 7:  Nuclear Chemistry

Course Materials and Technology

  1. The textbook we will use is available FREE online (as a PDF) to everyone registered for this course. If you want a hard copy, you can purchase:

Chemistry, Wilbraham, Staley, Matta, Waterman (Prentice Hall, 2008) ISBN: 0-13-251210-6. (We recommend buying used.)

  2. Computer with a microphone. (This is an interactive class; microphones are mandatory.)

  3. Scientific Calculator (I demo on a TI-30x iis)

  4. Scanner or smartphone with CamScanner (or a similar app that can scan multiple pages and save them as a single PDF file).

CHEMISTRY LAB (only required for those who are completing the Lab portion)

Course Materials and Technology for LAB

HomeworkAssignments include homework and a quiz with each chapter, unit tests, and a final exam. Most students will complete the weekly assignments in about 4 hours; some may need more time. Most assignments are completed online; some assignments will need to be hand-written, then scanned, and uploaded (as a PDF) for grading. Mrs. Dutton will be available to answer questions daily via the class discussion (forum). Mrs. Dutton will grade all assignments and give an overall grade for this course.

About Kathy Dutton

I hold both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, specializing in Biochemistry, and a BA in Accounting from the University of Michigan. My early career involved research, including work with catalytic converters, neurology, and immunology. I have about 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience across various venues, including university teaching, private tutoring, homeschool co-op classes, and public and Catholic schools.

I am (unsuccessfully) attempting semi-retirement. (I love HSC too much to fully retire!) In 2023, I and my husband, Dave, sponsored (brought) a Ukrainian refugee family to the US. - Mom, Dad, and 3 children. This included renovating part of our home to be an apartment for them and providing all they needed to integrate into American life. They have been a great blessing for US!!!

Additionally, I spend time volunteering at my local Catholic Church. And I sit on the Board of Directors for the Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair, an International Science and Engineering Fair associated fair. One day, I hope to learn how to make pottery.

In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and reading (mostly technical stuff). Dave & I both enjoy arts (often buying) and hiking, and we LOVE to travel!!! Our favorite parts of travel are getting to know the locals and their culture (especially the food), checking out the local arts, and hiking.

Dave & I raised three children, who are now far-flung across the western US. We currently live in mid-Michigan with the Ukrainian family we sponsored, and our two cats - Ella (the Princess) and Pierre (the Brute).
