Join us to explore the characteristics of a great hero while learning about Ireland’s history as we follow Red Hugh, the Prince of Donegal. Students will study the historical context of the novel, participate in engaging discussions, and complete projects of their choice.

Prerequisite: No class prerequisite. Your student will need PowerPoint 2007 or later version or the ability to convert a document to a PowerPoint-compatible file.

Course description: Living History Through Literature is a project-based course series. These courses weave the study of literature into a meaningful and engaging encounter with a specific era of history. In LHTL (Medieval): Red Hugh, Prince of Donegal, we meet Red Hugh, a real 16th-century Irish heir who is kidnapped by English forces. Red Hugh eventually escapes and joins freedom fighting forces to battle for Ireland’s freedom. Students will explore the characteristics of a great hero while learning about Ireland’s history. Students will study the historical context of the novel and participate in engaging literature discussions. In this project-based course, students will engage in short quizzes and in projects of their choice. Project options will include fiction writing, preparing period-specific food and/or costumes, creating lapbooks, recreating scenes from the novel (Legos, clay, K’nex, digital drawing, hand-drawing, etc.), building a timeline, mapping, and more.

About Jackie de Laveaga
Jackie de Laveaga is the Grade School Program Developer and instructor for the 4-year Grade School Multi-Subject Unity Study series at Homeschool Connections.
She has also developed grade school, middle school, and high school courses in literature, creative writing, and art. Mrs. de Laveaga holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Secondary Education and a Master of Education degree with an emphasis in Language Arts Instruction.
Her career includes fifteen years of online course development and instruction in writing, journalism, and humanities, as well as more than thirty years of teaching live-in-person courses in literature, history, composition, and drama to students of all ages.
Mrs. de Laveaga and her husband have five children and five grandchildren. They live in Arizona.
