Course Description: Give your third-grade student the most essential keys and skills to master beginning English and writing with this 12-week Language Arts course, especially designed for the homeschooling family! Here, your student learns significant ideas and practical how-tos that will develop a strong understanding of nouns and verbs – the foundational building blocks of language and writing. This instructional course explains how language works with weekly learning that includes what a noun is, pronouns, places, things, ideas, and proper names; what a verb is; writing action words with pronouns; actions/verbs around the house and town; “person verbs” with being and thinking; and writing actions with “ing” words.
Students learn through hands-on, sensory-based, easy-to-follow activities that develop beginning-level creativity and critical thinking, making learning fun for both children and parents. Course Outline:
Class 1: What is a noun? Definition/introduction (living and non-living things; things you can touch or think) and people (family and community)
Class 2: Pronouns (I, we, you, he/she, and they/them)
Class 3: Places (home, community, country, and the global natural environment)
Class 4: Things (objects in and outside the home: vehicles, plants, animals, insects, land, weather, events, and pluralization of nouns)
Class 5: Ideas (things you can’t touch: thinking, learning, faith, friendship, love)
Class 6: Proper Nouns (special names for people, places, and things)
Class 7: What is a verb? (definition/introduction and the five senses)
Class 8: Moving with Me (things we do using active verbs)
Class 9: Moving Around the House (household tasks)
Class 10: Moving Around Town (community, country, and the global natural environment)
Class 11: Actions with "ed" Endings (past tense)
Class 12: Action with “ing” Endings (action words from previous weeks with the “ing” ending, present tense)

About Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA
Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA, is the creator and Director of the Aquinas Writing Advantage program. She is the author of 22 books (including Simplified Writing 101: Top Secrets for College Writing Success) and has been a professional author, editor, and university professor for over 30 years. Professor Brown has been coaching professional authors and writers worldwide, speaks at conferences and webinars often, and is a writing judge for multiple fiction writing/novel writing contests each year.
Professor Brown has been designing online writing courses for students of all ages since the 1990s and has designed the online writing program for three universities. She taught at two universities for 17 years (writing courses, interpersonal communication, management and leadership, and critical thinking). Professor Brown was also the General Education Communications curriculum development lead (writing, communications, critical thinking) for Western Governors University and served almost 20 years as a Senior Global Strategist in writing and as a marketing director.
Professor Brown has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing/Genre Fiction from Western Colorado University, a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Rehabilitation, and a Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Education from Western Michigan University. Professor Brown was a homeschooling parent for 34 years and homeschooled 10 children. She lives in Michigan and enjoys writing Science Fiction and Fantasy books in coffee shops, speaking online and at conferences, and walking her dogs.
