Join this Medieval History course for a comprehensive overview of the European Middle Ages that helps your student understand and make connections with history and today, as well as see the connection between the Church & history.
How to get the most out of Catholic Middle Ages with Phillip Campbell:
First, read the course details and acquire the required texts.
Prepare a notebook for notetaking and homework.
Students begin the course by clicking on the "Recording" and watching Mr. Campbell's lecture for Class One.
Next, students should click on the Homework and complete the work in your notebook or on your computer.
If you need review, go back and watch the recording again and/or go over the Power Point.
Repeat until all 12 classes are complete.
Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.
Special Notes: Includes a writing component. This is Part One of a 2-part course. Students are expected to sign up for “The Rending of Christendom (1415-1648)” to complete the full year.
Total Classes: 12
Prerequisite: None. However, "Life and Times of the Ancient Romans" is recommended.
Suggested Grade Level: 10th to 12th grade. 9th grade with strong reading and writing skills. No middle school students, please.
Suggested Credit: One full semester of Medieval or World History. For a full year credit, sign up for “The Rending of Christendom (1415-1648)” as well.

Course Description: The course studies the Middle Ages from a perspective of the contributions of the Catholic religion to the cultural, political, intellectual, and artistic life of the Middle Ages. This is not a comprehensive political medieval history course, but rather a religious history course on the development of Catholicism throughout the medieval era.

Class 5: Charlemagne
Class 6: Investiture & Ideology
Class 7: Dawn of Scholasticism
Class 8: Cluniacs & Cistercians
Class 9: Deus Vult and the Crusades
Class 10: Mendicant Orders
Class 11: Medieval Heresy
Class 12: Church vs. StateCourse Materials: The Catholic Middle Ages Sourcebook and Answer Key (two books, but they can be purchased together) Please note, all books are print on demand, which means they must first be printed before they are shipped. Shipping can take up to 14 business days.
Homework: Weekly reading assignments along with short answer questions. Expect to spend three hours per week on homework in addition to weekly lectures and review.

Phillip Campbell
Phillip Campbell holds a BA in European History from Ave Maria University and a certificate in Secondary Education through Madonna University. He taught history and Scripture for the St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program for ten years and is the author of the popular ” Story of Civilization” series by TAN Books. Mr. Campbell has also been published by The Catholic Textbook Project, Ave Maria Press, Our Sunday Visitor, Arx Publishing, and Arouca Press and his articles have appeared in online and print journals such as the St. Austin Review, New Oxford Review, and New Liturgical Movement.
