Course description: This course will cover American military history from the Revolution to the Second World War. Students will learn the causes, motives, and tactics of America’s wars and conflicts. This analysis will be through a uniquely Christian perspective viewing each topic through the lens of Catholic teaching. Additionally, students will learn about the role of the chaplaincy and how it has ministered to the American military through the years. Students will get to take a hard look at American military history and ask tough ideological questions while at the same time growing in appreciation for the role the American military has played in history, creating a safer and freer world.

Class 2: Revolutionary War Part 1
Class 3: Revolutionary War Part 2
Class 4: The War of 1812, the Second War for American Independence
Class 5: The Mexican-American War
Class 6: The Civil War Part 1
Class 7: The Civil War Part 2 / Reconstruction
Class 8: Mid Term Recap/Term Paper proposals
Class 9: World War I
Class 10: World War II Part 1
Class 11: World War II Part 2
Class 12: Summary

Course materials:

History in the Making: A History of the People of the United States of America to 1877
("History in the Making: A History of the People of the United States of America" by Catherine Locks, Sarah Mergel et al. (usg.edu))
Students will also be provided with excerpts from the following texts:
The American heritage book of the: Revolution, Civil War, World War I, and World War II
Battles and Leaders of the Civil War Sets 1-4
Supplementary reading may also be suggested to students.

NOTE: All materials contain mild language, war violence, and art or photos of warfare to include casualties. In addition, students will view clips of films and lectures covering specific events in the course. Some of these films are rated up to R or TV-MA; the students will view the historically relevant parts, not viewing any other parts of the film that are at the R or TV-MA level. Example: students will view a reenactment of the British surrender at Yorktown, VA, from the television series “Turn: Washington’s Spies” rated TV-MA, but they will only be viewing the historical reenactment of the surrender.

Homework: Each week students will participate in discussion questions and/or quizzes. They will be required to write one 3-to-5-page essay from a list of approved topics. Students should expect to spend 1 to 3 hours a week on homework.

About Kyle Moore

Kyle F. Moore, Th.M., has over 18 years of experience in Catholic education and ministry. He is an Afghan War Veteran and holds a Master of Arts Degree in Theology and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Instructor of Technology and Military Science.

He currently resides in Florida with his wife, where they homeschool their four children.
