Course Description: Students will explore the “Road to Revolution” starting with the question of why people pushed for change. Students will learn the cost of the Revolution to the British and to the colonists. They will study leaders and heroes of the war, on both sides. The classes will also go beyond the facts and ask what it means to be an American, what liberty is, and how our perception of liberty has changed over our country’s history.

Course outline:

Class 1: Colonial Climate and Life

Class 2: British Policies Cause the Colonies to Revolt

Class 3: Sons of Liberty and Boston Massacre Trial

Class 4: The Intolerable Acts, The First and Second Continental Congresses and Battles of Lexington and Concord

Class 5: The War Begins, The Continental Army and Intelligence

Class 6: Spies (cont'd.), Siege of Boston, Battle of Long Island

Class 7: Trenton, Jefferson and The Declaration of Independence

Class 8: Declaration of Independence and the Role of Women

Class 9: Saratoga, Valley Forge, American Allies and The Continental Navy

Class 10: Yorktown, Articles of Confederation and Preliminary Articles of Peace

Course Materials: Provided FREE by the instructor.

Homework: Students can expect to spend approx. two hours per week outside of class on homework. Short written essays, reading assignments, and final, graded by the instructor.

Answer Key: An answer key booklet is included with this course. However, a parent or tutor may still be required to grade essay projects.
