Physical Science, Part Three
- Summary
-
Continue learning Physical Science this year with this deep dive into matter, atomic energy, and more. You will be well prepared for Chemistry and Physics after taking this course. Follow up with Inspiration, Invention, Innovation in the spring semester.
How to get the most out of Physical Science, Part Three with Kathy Dutton:
View, and take notes on, the Lecture Videos before the Live Class.
Bring to every Live Class:
a notebook (to take notes),
something to write with,
a calculator, your textbook,
the willingness to participate and learn.
a working mic (mandatory!)
Watch that week's recording if you need to revisit information from our live session.
Do the assignments, quizzes, and tests.
Turn in all assignments by the due date. Due dates are firm!
Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.
Special notes: This is a 3-part course. Part One is a prerequisite for Part Three (Part Two is recommended but not required). There are pre-recorded lecture videos in addition to the 13 live classes. One week the live class may be changed to a pre-recorded class.
Completion of this semester of Physical Science with a grade of a B or better will allow your student to skip high school chemistry and take AP Chemistry.
Total classes: 13 live classes plus pre-recorded lectures, which must be viewed before class each week. NOTE: One week the live class may be changed to a pre-recorded class.
Class dates: Thursdays, January 9 to April 10, 2025 (last assignment due April 15). No class March 6 or April 17 (Easter break).
Starting time: 11:30 AM Eastern (10:30 Central; 9:30 Mountain; 8:30 Pacific)
Duration: 50 minutes
Prerequisite: 8th-grade math is required. Physical Science, Part One is highly recommended. Physical Science, Parts Two and Three can be taken concurrently.
Suggested grade level: 8th to 10th grade
Suggested credit: Middle School: One-half semester of science. Parts one and two together are one full year of middle school Physical Science. High School: One-third semester of science. Parts one, two, and three together are one full year of high school Physical Science
Instructor: Kathy Dutton
Course description: This is a ‘flipped’ class. Students will be required to watch the recorded lecture before coming to the live class. The live class will be in a discussion (question and answer) format based on the lecture.
We will be studying the matter and forces that God used to create our universe. Completion of this course (parts 1, 2, & 3) will be excellent preparation for high school Chemistry and Physics.
Course outline:
Unit 1: Building Blocks of Matter
Topic 1: Elements and Compounds
Topic 2: Atoms
Topic 3: The Periodic Table
Unit 2: Interactions of Matter
Topic 1: Chemical Bonding
Topic 2: Chemical Reactions
Unit 3: Special Topics
Topic 1: Acids & Bases
Topic 2: Atomic Energy

About Kathy Dutton
I hold both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, specializing in Biochemistry, and a BA in Accounting from the University of Michigan. My early career involved research, including work with catalytic converters, neurology, and immunology. I have about 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience across various venues, including university teaching, private tutoring, homeschool co-op classes, and public and Catholic schools.
I am (unsuccessfully) attempting semi-retirement. (I love HSC too much to fully retire!) In 2023, I and my husband, Dave, sponsored (brought) a Ukrainian refugee family to the US. - Mom, Dad, and 3 children. This included renovating part of our home to be an apartment for them and providing all they needed to integrate into American life. They have been a great blessing for US!!!
Additionally, I spend time volunteering at my local Catholic Church. And I sit on the Board of Directors for the Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair, an International Science and Engineering Fair associated fair. One day, I hope to learn how to make pottery.
In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and reading (mostly technical stuff). Dave & I both enjoy arts (often buying) and hiking, and we LOVE to travel!!! Our favorite parts of travel are getting to know the locals and their culture (especially the food), checking out the local arts, and hiking.
Dave & I raised three children, who are now far-flung across the western US. We currently live in mid-Michigan with the Ukrainian family we sponsored, and our two cats - Ella (the Princess) and Pierre (the Brute).
