Summary

It is recommended that the parent sits in on the weekly live class, so they can best assist students in making materials and doing memory work. If a parent is not available during the live class, they can watch the recording the next day.

This is Part Two of a two-part course. Students may be accepted midyear if the instructor grants permission. Contact the instructor by email if you would like to join midyear.

How to get the most out of Grade School Beginning Latin, Part Two with Olivia Jones:

  • First, read the course materials below before the first class meeting.

  • Then have a notebook ready and available for class notes each live session.

  • Read assignments before class meetings

  • Watch that week’s recording if you need to revisit information from our live session.

  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that week.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Course description: Students will continue their introduction to basic Latin speaking and reading skills through fun activities and homework assignments. By the end of the semester, students will have cemented and expanded their previous abilities to read a short Latin passage, answer comprehension questions in Latin, and sustain a 5-minute Latin conversation. In addition to the map of the Roman Empire, students will learn about the Roman household in order to write a cartoon dialogue entirely in Latin by the end of the semester. This course will prepare students for beginning middle school Latin with any Latin curriculum. We will explore mainly Ecclesiastical pronunciations.

Course outline:

Week 1: Introduction to year two and review of conversational Latin from GS Beginning Latin.

Week 2: Review of vocabulary from GS Beginning Latin.

Week 3: Review of grammar from GS Beginning Latin.(Map of the Roman Empire: Vocabulary, Genders, Ubi est? Singularis vs. pluralis, etc. Familia Romana: adjectives, interrogatives, etc.)

Week 4: Romana Familia: Practice contextual reading (capitulum II). New vocabulary, part 1: adjectives and nouns

Week 5: Romana Familia:  Practice contextual reading (capitulum II). 

Week 6: Romana Familia: Genders of Names. Contextual reading for genetive.

Week 7: Romana Familia: quis/quae/qui and et/-que, sed,

Week 8: Romana Familia: Genetive Plural.

Week 9: Romana Familia: cuius/quot

Week 10: Romana Familia: numerus est adjectivus/possessive adjectives/ecce

Week 11: Creating Latin sentences and answering questions

Week 12: Submit a cartoon of a Latin family dialogue. Optional Final Exam: reading two pages of a Latin conversation with the vocabulary learned this semester.

Course materials: Lingua Latina Book 1: Familia Romana by Hans Orberg, ISBN 13: 9781585104208. This book is used for multiple years of grade school Latin and need only be purchased once. Students may purchase a used copy through bookfinder.com.

A working microphone is required for this course. Starting on the first day of class, 60 blank flashcards for vocabulary words and terms must be available to the student. Some means of taking pictures of flashcards and uploading them to the course page will be required (this can be as simple as using a mobile phone). A downloadable map will be provided free by the instructor.

Homework: Students will be expected to spend 10-15 minutes every school day either making or studying vocabulary flashcards. Example flashcards and pronunciation videos will be provided by the instructor. Additionally, students will teach and practice basic conversational skills with parents (or knowledgeable siblings) and complete one review assignment for an average of 30 minutes once per week before class. Once per semester, students will submit a creative project.

 

 Fee: For all 12 classes: $177 if you register on or before November 15, $197 if you register after Nov. 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Olivia Jones

Mrs. Olivia Jones graduated from Wyoming Catholic College, where she spent four years studying Latin through the immersion method. She participated in weeklong Latin immersion camping trips in Utah and Wyoming, in which only Latin was spoken among the participants, and led one her senior year.

After college, Mrs. Jones moved with her husband to Texas, where she has enjoyed sharing her love of Latin through both in-person classes and online tutoring. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have been blessed so far with one baby boy.

In addition to Latin, Mrs. Jones enjoys studying bioethics, reading history aloud with her husband, learning Gregorian chant, and long hikes.

Mrs. Jones is currently pursuing a certification in advanced Ecclesiastical Latin through the Veterum Sapientia Institute.
