Recorded course taught by Joseph Pearce for High School Renaissance/Shakespeare Literature
Summary

Step into the enchanted Forest of Arden in As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s most joyful and meaningful comedies. In this six-week course, Professor Joseph Pearce unpacks the play’s hidden depth—revealing its themes of exile, virtue, love, and redemption through a Catholic lens. A perfect blend of wit, wisdom, and wonder for high school literature students!

Course Description: A six-week course on one of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies in which students will discover that As You Like It is much more than merely a comedy. None of Shakespeare’s comedies are simply comedies. There is always much that is serious within that which is merely fun or funny. Professor Pearce will show the deep religious and moral truths that emerge within the play. He will show how the heroes and heroines are those who have been forced into exile by corrupt and malevolent rulers. He will show how these happy outlaws, living in a remote forest, like Robin Hood and his merry men, embody the spirit of the Merrie England of the Catholic Middle Ages. He will show the foolishness of the rich and the wisdom of the poor, and the happy ending that comes with happy marriages but also surprising religious conversion.
