Grade 3 Math (MEP) Part One with Kris Correira
Recorded course taught by Kris Correira for Grade School Math
Summary

The British-based Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) is a comprehensive math program for grades K-12. This well-designed, integrated spiral program develops math fluency using a wide variety of activities that integrate concepts in such a way that students learn math by figuring out how to solve them.

You can read more about MEP in a blog post I wrote for HSC: https://homeschoolconnections.com/homeschool-mep-math/

Are you wondering where to begin with grade school math? Try the free placement test HERE.

Course Description: MEP has been adapted for US homeschoolers and the Homeschool Connections format. It includes complete lesson plans, a student book, and answer keys.

The course does not have lectures; instead, math proficiency is acquired through doing and discussing various math exercises. The teacher introduces and guides each activity as students find solutions as a class and individually.

MEP has four lessons each week. The recorded classes go through activities in the first lesson plan of that week except the three to five problems that also appear in the student practice book. Students complete the practice book problems as "homework" with parents assisting as needed. Parents use the lesson plans to "teach" the activities in remaining three lessons, and the student completes the practice book page for the lesson.

Parents need to review the "homework" together with students as guided by the prompts in the lesson plan.

Special notes

MEP introduces multiplication and division in Bk2. For this course, we will use custom books that are a combination of 10 weeks from Bk2 and the rest from Bk3. The combination books have already been compiled and are available in the Start Here section of the course. All rising 3rd graders start here and should be comfortable with addition and subtraction.

Total classes

13

Prerequisites

Students comfortable with addition and subtraction who have not yet started multiplication and division.

Suggested grade level

3rd or 4th grade

Suggested credit

½ year of Math

Outline

Course Outline: The course follows the MEP Year 2/3 hybrid weekly lesson plans.

Materials

All MEP materials can be downloaded from https://www.cimt.org.uk/projects/mepres/primary/index.htm and are available in Caravel.

Other materials

  • Colored pencils

  • Graph paper (printable version available in Caravel)

  • Metric ruler

  • Lots of scrap paper or a chalk/dry-erase board

We recommend you have math manipulatives available to help students visualize concepts. These can be purchased or homemade (see Start Here section of the course for downloads). Consider:

  • Coins - pennies, nickels, and dimes (real or play)

  • Counters of various colors

  • Place value bars (1s, 10s, 100s)

  • Fraction set

  • Congruent and similar basic geometric shapes (several tangram sets are helpful)

Homework

Parent and child together complete the remaining three 30-minute lessons each week. Students independently complete a single page of 3 to 5 math problems daily, one for each lesson, so four in total each week. Parents correct these with students guided by the prompts in the lesson plan. Exam preparation (if you opt to take it) is not necessary, as it is competency-based.
