Why do adolescents act the way they do? Why are teenagers so moody? Are all teens addicted to social media? Is adolescence really as bad as portrayed in the media? These questions and many more will be answered in this course where we will learn about adolescent development from a Catholic perspective.

Course description: This course is an introduction to adolescent development and will cover many of the major adolescent development theories and focus on physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development from a Catholic perspective.

Parents should note that mature topics will be touched upon including puberty, gender development, and relationships.

Class 6: Identity Development

Class 7: Moral Development

Class 8: Learning & Achievement

Class 9: Families

Class 10: Peers & Media

Class 11: Psychosocial Problems

Class 12: What’s next? A brief intro on Emerging Adulthood

Course Materials: All materials will be provided FREE by the instructor.

Homework: Students will take online quizzes and complete weekly written activities and discussion questions. An application paper applying adolescent development principles to some form of media will also be required (approx. three to five pages). Expect to spend 1-3 hours per week on homework outside of class.

About Kristi Moore, Ph.D.

Dr. Kristi Moore earned her PhD in Educational and Developmental Psychology from the University of Florida and is currently an Associate Professor and Program Director for the Applied Psychology graduate program at Angelo State University.

She specializes in child and adolescent development and learning and motivation. Dr. Moore has been teaching psychology since 2009.

She enjoys fulfilling her vocation as a wife and homeschool mother to her four children. Dr. Moore and her husband are licensed foster parents in Florida.
