How to get the most out of Common Sense 101 with G.K. Chesterton with John C "Chuck" Chalberg, Ph.D.:

  • Then have a notebook ready and available for class notes each live session.

  • Read assignments before class meetings

  • Watch that week’s recording if you need to revisit information from our live session.

  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that week.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Course Description: This course will present an overview of G.K. Chesterton's thinking on a number of subjects, all related to Catholicism and common sense. The centerpiece will be Dale Ahlquist's “Common Sense 101”, which is based on the EWTN series featuring Mr. Ahlquist as himself and Dr. Chalberg as G. K. Chesterton. The course itself will be taught with Dr. Chalberg in character as Mr. Chesterton. Included will be prepared short segments on topics related to the reading in which Dr. Chalberg will be Mr. Chesterton. The class will also include a discussion between the students and Mr. Chesterton on the assigned reading from the Ahlquist book.

Course Materials: “Common Sense 101: Lessons from Chesterton” by Dale Ahlquist, ISBN # 978-1586171391 (https://www.chesterton.org/shop/common-sense-101/).

Homework: The reading of the Alquist book will be divided into six sessions for the course. The estimated reading time for each session will be roughly an hour to an hour and a half. There will be two quizzes, one at the end of the first three sessions and the other at the end of the second three sessions. There will be an optional paper. The topic will be of the student's choosing after consultation with Mr. Chesterton (otherwise known as Dr. Chalberg). The length will be 1,000 to 1,200 words. The deadline is flexible.

About Dr. Chalberg

Dr. Chalberg is a graduate of Regis College (now Regis University) in Denver, Colorado. He holds an MA and PhD in history from the University of Minnesota. He taught American history at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, MN, until his retirement in 2016. He was a Fulbright lecturer in Hungary in 1992 and is a senior fellow for the Center of the American Experiment.

He has performed as G.K. Chesterton on EWTN’s “The Apostle of Common Sense” for a number of years. He performs and lectures as Chesterton at schools and parishes across the country. In addition, he performs as Theodore Roosevelt, H.L. Mencken, George Orwell, and baseball’s Branch Rickey.

His website is historyonstage.net. He has written a biography of Emma Goldman and a dual biography of Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey. He has also edited a volume on the history of American isolationism. He has written for a number of publications, including The Weekly Standard, Chronicles, the Imaginative Conservative, Touchstone, Intellectual Takeout, the University Bookman, Gilbert!, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
