Gain an understanding of the American legal system and its laws from a practicing lawyer, as we are introduced to the US legal structure, the Constitution and legal rights, criminal law, torts and contracts, property and individual rights, and more.

Prerequisite: None. However, American Government is recommended
Suggested High School Credit: 2/3 semester credit for government or law. Additional reading can be assigned by the parent for a full semester credit.

Course Description: Join this introduction to the legal system that surrounds us, governs us and influences us every day -- even if we're not aware of it. In this course, you will gain a basic understanding of some fundamental concepts of the American legal system and will review some of the different areas of law.

Week 2: The Role of the Courts; Judicial review
Week 3: Constitutional Law; the Bill of Rights; Stare Decisis
Week 4: Criminal Law
Week 5: Torts
Week 6: Torts, cont.
Week 7: Contracts
Week 8: Property
Week 9: Final Class; Major US Supreme Court cases
Course Materials: Law 101 (5th ed.) by Jay M. Feinman, https://www.textbooks.com/Law-101-5th-Edition/9780190866327/Jay-M-Feinman.php various cases; other materials found free online or as a pdf from the instructor.
Homework: One to two hours of preparatory reading and homework per class on average. Reading entails book chapters that correspond with the area of law we’re discussing. Students will brief cases and/or answer short answer questions about the readings.
Answer Key: An answer key is not included with this course.

About Jason Negri, MS, JD
ATTORNEY
A member of the State Bar of Michigan since 2003, Negri’s solo practice specializes in transactional law, wills & trusts and small business needs. He is a member of the Estate Planning & Probate section, and is a co-founder of the Religious Liberty Law section of the Bar.
VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
Negri serves on the board of the Patients Rights Council, based in Steubenville, OH. He is also the founder and Executive Director of The Daniel Coalition, based in Whitmore Lake, MI.
AUTHOR
Negri has written articles which have appeared in Faith magazine, Crisis Magazine Online, and Columbia, the monthly magazine of the Knights of Columbus. He co-authored the booklet Freedom to Flourish: A Catholic Analysis of Doctor-Prescribed Suicide and Euthanasia, published in 2011 by the Knights of Columbus as part of their Veritas series. He also authored the booklet Twenty Answers on End-of-Life Issues, published in 2014 by Catholic Answers, Inc.
EDUCATOR AND SPEAKER
Negri has taught courses in Business Law and Education Law as an adjunct professor at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, MI, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has also taught both Civics and Intro to Law on the high school level. He speaks nationally on the practical and ethical aspects of end-of-life issues, and has provided workshops and training to those seeking to improve their ability to effectively communicate these issues.
MEMBERSHIPS
Negri is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He has served on the boards of two different charter public schools in Southeast Michigan, and is the elected Treasurer of Hamburg Township in Michigan, where he resides with his wife Samantha and their children.
