Physical Science, Part One
Recorded course taught by Kathy Dutton for Middle School Physical Science
Summary

In this course, you will study the matter and forces that God used to create our universe. Students will watch a recorded lecture before class in this “flipped classroom” and bring assignment questions and ideas to the interactive classroom.

How to get the most out of  Physical Science, Part One with Kathy Dutton:

  • View, and take notes on, the Lecture Videos before the Live Class.

  • Bring to every Live Class:

    • a notebook (to take notes),

    • something to write with,

    • a calculator, your textbook,

    • the willingness to participate and learn.

    •  a working mic (mandatory!)

  • Watch that week's recording if you need to revisit information from our live session.

  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and tests.

  • Turn in all assignments by the due date. Due dates are firm!

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Special Notes:

  • This is a 3-part course. Part One is a prerequisite for both Part Two and Part Three. Students are expected to sign up for Part Two OR Three in the Spring. Due to the popularity of this course, it is offered twice (on the same day). Choose the time that works best for you and your homeschool. There are weekly pre-recorded lecture lessons in addition to the 13 live classes. One week the live class may be changed to a pre-recorded class.

Total Classes: 13 live classes plus pre-recorded lessons, which must be viewed before the live class each week.

Duration: 50 minutes

Prerequisite: 7th-grade math, previous or concurrent

Suggested Grade Level: 7th to 9th grade

Suggested Credit: Middle School: One-half semester of science. Parts one and two together are one full year of middle school Physical Science. High School: One-third semester of science. Parts one, two, and three together are one full year of high school Physical Science

Instructor: Kathy Dutton

Course Description: This is a ‘flipped’ class. Students will be required to watch the recorded lecture before coming to the live class.  The live class will be in a discussion (question and answer) format based on the lecture. We will study the matter and forces that God used to create our universe. Completion of this course (Parts One and Two) is excellent preparation for high school chemistry and physics.

Course Outline:

  • Unit 1 - Introduction to Physical Science

    • Topic 1: The World of Physical Science (What is Physical Science?, The Scientific Method, Scientific Models, Measurement)

    • Topic 2:  The Properties of Matter (What is Matter?, Physical Properties, Chemical Properties)

    • Topic 3:  States of Matter (Three States of Matter, Behavior of Gases, Changes of State)

  • Unit 2 – Motion & Forces

    • Topic 1:  Matter in Motion (Measuring Matter, What is Force?, Friction: A Force That Opposes Motion), Gravity: A Force of Attraction)

    • Topic 2:  Forces and Motion (Gravity and Motion, Newton's Law of Motion, Momentum)

    • Topic 3: Forces in Fluids (Fluids and Pressure, Buoyant Force, Fluids in Motion)

Course Materials and Technology:

  • 1. Text: Holt Science and Technology: Physical Science (Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 2007) ISBN: 0-03-046228-2. We recommend buying used. (www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0030462282/catholictreas-20).

NOTE: I will provide the 2004 edition of this text free online to the class. It is missing some information.  Everything missing from the text is available in the class recordings and accompanying slides. This is an acceptable, but not ideal, alternative to the textbook.

    2.   A calculator

    3.   A computer with a working microphone. (This is an interactive class; microphones are mandatory.)

Homework:

  • The pre-recorded lecture videos must be viewed before the live class each week.

  • Assignments include online homework, a quiz with each chapter, and unit tests.

  • All assignments are auto-graded with immediate feedback.

  • Most students will complete the weekly assignments in about 2 to 2.5 hours.

  • Mrs. Dutton will be available to answer questions daily via the class discussion (forum) and will give an overall grade for this course.

About Kathy Dutton

I hold both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, specializing in Biochemistry, and a BA in Accounting from the University of Michigan. My early career involved research, including work with catalytic converters, neurology, and immunology. I have about 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience across various venues, including university teaching, private tutoring, homeschool co-op classes, and public and Catholic schools.

I am (unsuccessfully) attempting semi-retirement. (I love HSC too much to fully retire!) In 2023, I and my husband, Dave, sponsored (brought) a Ukrainian refugee family to the US. - Mom, Dad, and 3 children. This included renovating part of our home to be an apartment for them and providing all they needed to integrate into American life. They have been a great blessing for US!!!

Additionally, I spend time volunteering at my local Catholic Church. And I sit on the Board of Directors for the Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair, an International Science and Engineering Fair associated fair. One day, I hope to learn how to make pottery.

In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and reading (mostly technical stuff). Dave & I both enjoy arts (often buying) and hiking, and we LOVE to travel!!! Our favorite parts of travel are getting to know the locals and their culture (especially the food), checking out the local arts, and hiking.

Dave & I raised three children, who are now far-flung across the western US. We currently live in mid-Michigan with the Ukrainian family we sponsored, and our two cats - Ella (the Princess) and Pierre (the Brute).
