Summary

Personal safety and self-defense is a course that all high school girls should consider. Now is the time to learn situational awareness and prevention techniques to increase your safety and street-smarts. Course content is realistic, applicable, and can be implemented immediately.

Course Description: Personal Safety and Situational Awareness for Young Women is a practical course focused on empowering young women with the knowledge and skills to stay safe in various environments. Students will learn fundamental self-defense strategies, including basic techniques for protecting themselves in dangerous situations and the importance of maintaining strength and fitness. The course will also emphasize the importance of situational awareness, teaching students how to recognize potential threats, avoid dangerous situations, and respond confidently when faced with adversity. Topics covered include personal safety, self-defense laws, conflict de-escalation, and using intuition and observation to assess risks in everyday life. The course is designed to build physical and mental resilience, boosting students' confidence and preparing them to respond effectively to a variety of situations.

Physical self-defense techniques will not be taught but resources will be provided if students want to find in-person resources and/or classes.

Day 3: Safety in Crowds

Day 4: Safety Out and About Alone

Day 5: What to do if You Are Being Followed

Day 6: Safe Use of Technology, Social Media and Personal Information

Day 7: Safely Meeting New People

Day 8: De-escalation and Reporting

Materials

  • None required.

Homework

Students will have safety checklists and assignments that help them to increase situational awareness. Examples include exercises to increase use of personal senses, “what would you do?” scenarios, safety checks of the home, creating emergency plans, and readings provided by the instructor. The final project includes creating a comprehensive personal safety plan.

Grading Help for Parents: Parents will receive a checklist of assignments and are encouraged to complete the assignment along with their student.

Fees

For all 8 classes: $127 if you register on or before April 15th; $147 if you register after April 15th. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $25 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Kerrie Berends

Kerrie Berends, PhD, has worked in the health and wellness field for over 30 years and has extensive education and experience teaching homeschool K-12, university level, and individuals with disabilities and diseases throughout the lifespan. She holds two Masters degrees (adapted PE and teaching) and Doctorate in kinesiology. Dr. Berends holds industry certifications in Exercise Physiology (ACSM) and is a Certified Fitness Nutrition Coach and Sports Nutrition Specialist (NESTA). Dr. Berends currently teaches full time in Exercise Science and Nutrition at the university level and lives with her husband in Michigan. Her three homeschooled children are now each busy with their own careers (post-baccalaureate sales engineer, US Navy, and preschool teacher).
