Special Notes: This is Part Two of a two-part course. If you would like to join us midyear, please email for permission from the instructor. The required lab work is integral to this course. However, a virtual dissection option can be provided for students if needed.

Course Description: This is a high school biology course that covers human and animal biology as well as plant systems. The course also prepares students for ACT/SAT biology. Students are expected to take notes during class and ask questions. Notes will help with weekly quizzes; quizzes are open book. This Biology course is a general overview of high school Biology presented from a Catholic perspective.

Class 1: Bacteria and Viruses
Class 2: Protista and Fungi
Class 3: Plant Diversity, Responses, and Adaptation
Class 4: Roots, Stems, Leaves, and Reproduction of Seed Plants
Class 5: Invertebrates
Class 6: Fishes, Amphibians, and Reptiles
Class 7: Birds and Mammals
Class 8: Comparing Chordates and Behavior
Class 9: Nervous System
Class 10: Skeletal, Muscular and Integumentary Systems
Class 11: Circulatory and Respiratory Systems
Class 12: Digestive and Excretory Systems
Class 13: Endocrine and Reproductive Systems
Class 14: Human Biology

Lab sequence: (Note: Labs are alternate weeks; Labs will require purchase of specimens for dissection.)

1. Bread Mold: We get to grow our own mold colony on a slice of bread!
2. Crayfish: Identify the external and internal anatomical features of a typical crustacean.
3. Perch: Observe the external and internal features of the fish and their relationship to one another.
4. Clam: Locate the external and internal features of the clam and be able to explain their purpose.
5. Eye: Explore the structure and function of the bovine eye.
6. Frog: Dissection giving the student an overview of organ systems of complex living things.
7. Worm: Investigate basic anatomy and simple organ systems.

Homework: Weekly vocabulary, reading, and quizzes. Expect to spend approximately one to two hours on homework each week outside of the classroom. LAB time will vary: 1-1½ hours on alternate weeks.

Fee: For all 14 classes plus labs: $237 if you register on or before November 15, $257 after Nov. 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registration is not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About MacBeth Derham

MacBeth Derham studied biology at Mount Holyoke College and has taught natural history in the field for over 35 years. She currently teaches classes for her homeschool group, tutors math and science privately, and conducts a Marine Biology field school twice a year for local students.

From 2005-2020 she worked with The Front Lawn Players, a Shakespeare troupe made up of students ages 3-18, as both a speech coach and director. She spent the summer of 2017 in Oxford studying literature (including Shakespeare), philosophy, theology, and history. A more than reasonable amount of her time there was spent out of doors, in nature, walking the paths loved by Lewis, Tolkien, and friends. An amateur wildlife and travel photographer, many of her courses feature her own images of creature encounters from both home and abroad. Thanks to her children, she has a fine collection of animal skulls and skeletons.

Mrs. Derham speaks at homeschool conferences on the interdisciplinary need for nature study. She is a retired homeschooling mother of four very different grown children, grandmother of 4 west-coasters, and wife to Don.
