Summary

Do you ever wonder what the big deal is about poetry? Or perhaps you love poetry and can’t understand why others don’t share your enthusiasm? Well, this is a course everyone will enjoy! Come along as we uncover the power and beauty of this mysterious literary form and even learn how to write some verses ourselves.

Join us as we seek to unravel the mysteries of meter & metaphor, rhythm & rhyme, and gain a whole new perspective on poetry. We’ll learn the methods poets use to pack powerful ideas and emotions into just a few lines of verse. Together we will read a wide variety of poems, from the hauntingly beautiful to the downright silly. Prepare to be inspired!

Materials

Students will obtain a notebook, journal, or looseleaf binder to keep the poems. All poems will be made available free as a downloadable PDF from the teacher.

Homework

Students will obtain a notebook, journal, or looseleaf binder which will serve as their special poetry journal. Each week, students will handwrite or print out at least one of the poems we analyzed in class. Be creative with calligraphy, special fonts, or illustrations. This notebook will serve as the final project for the course. Overall, students should expect to spend one to two hours on homework each week, including reading and writing the assigned poems and/or their own verses in the notebook, taking online comprehension quizzes, and considering optional reflection questions. Prepare to be inspired!

About Marjule Anne Hartmann, M.A.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Marjule earned her bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University and master’s degree at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. After a period of further study in Munich, Germany, Marjule made her way back to New Jersey, where she started teaching at a private school and married her wonderful husband, John.

Together they have two children, now grown and successful homeschool graduates. Marjule spent many joyful years at her parish homeschool co-op teaching subjects such as literature, history, and German. When she’s not teaching or spending time with family and friends, Marjule enjoys reading, cooking, and listening to music with her stout little pug, Watson.
