Why do children act the way they do? Why don’t babies sleep through the night? Why do children throw temper tantrums? Why can’t young children follow the rules of a game? These questions and many more will be answered in this course where we will learn about child development from a Catholic perspective.

How to get the most out of Child Development with Kristi Moore, PhD:

  • First, read the course materials below before watching the class recording.

  • Then have a notebook ready and available for class notes during each recording.

  • Read assignments before watching the class recording.

  • Watch that class’s recording again if you need to revisit information.

  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that class.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Course Description: This course is an introduction to child development and will cover many of the major child development theories and research and focus on physical, cognitive, and social & emotional development from a Catholic perspective.

Parents should note that mature topics will be touched upon including prenatal development and gender development.

Class 2: Prenatal Development

Class 3: Infancy & Toddlerhood: Physical Development

Class 4: Infancy & Toddlerhood: Cognitive Development

Class 5: Infancy & Toddlerhood: Social & Emotional

Class 6: Early Childhood: Physical Development

Class 7: Early Childhood: Cognitive Development

Class 8: Early Childhood: Social & Emotional

Class 9: Middle Childhood: Physical Development

Class 10: Middle Childhood: Cognitive Development

Class 11: Middle Childhood: Social & Emotional

Class 12: What’s next? A brief intro on Adolescence

Homework:  There will be pre-recorded lectures to view in addition to the recorded classes. Students will take online quizzes and complete weekly written activities and discussion questions. An application paper applying child development principles to some form of media will also be required (approx. four to six pages). Expect to spend 1-3 hours per week on homework outside of class.

About Kristi Moore, Ph.D.

Dr. Kristi Moore earned her PhD in Educational and Developmental Psychology from the University of Florida and is currently an Associate Professor and Program Director for the Applied Psychology graduate program at Angelo State University.

She specializes in child and adolescent development and learning and motivation. Dr. Moore has been teaching psychology since 2009.

She enjoys fulfilling her vocation as a wife and homeschool mother to her four children. Dr. Moore and her husband are licensed foster parents in Florida.
