Course Description: 

This course will acquaint students with a basic introduction to the political and cultural history of the Byzantine Empire. Major dates, persons, battles, and events will all be covered, as well as important cultural and religious ideas. This course will help students better understand the Christian heritage of the east and Byzantium's continuing influence on Christendom.

  • Class 3: Wars of Heraclius

  • Class 4: The Coming of Islam

  • Class 5: Iconoclasm

  • Class 6: Renaissance

  • Class 7: High Byzantine Culture

  • Class 8: Schism and Crusades

  • Class 9: Latins and Ottomans

  • Class 10: Attempts at Reunion

  • Class 11: Fall of Constantinople

  • Class 12: Byzantine Legacy

Course Materials: Required textbook is A Concise History of Byzantium by Warren Treadgold, 1st edition, ISBN #0333718305 (https://amzn.to/3rbUvC1) or 2nd edition ISBN #978-1352009873 (https://amzn.to/3oKmAPc)

Homework:  Homework will consist of class readings from the textbook (approx. one hour per class) and automated class quizzes.

Phillip Campbell holds a BA in European History from Ave Maria University and a certificate in Secondary Education through Madonna University. He taught history and Scripture for the St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program for ten years and is the author of the popular ” Story of Civilization” series by TAN Books. Mr. Campbell has also been published by The Catholic Textbook Project, Ave Maria Press, Our Sunday Visitor, Arx Publishing, and Arouca Press and his articles have appeared in online and print journals such as the St. Austin Review, New Oxford Review, and New Liturgical Movement.
