We all know -- COVID-19 consumed our world over the past year. Here, you’ll learn all about bacteria and viruses, what it has to do with us and our everyday lives, and how pandemics impact history and our world today.
How to get the most out of Pandemic Diseases with Monica Breier:
First, read the course materials below before watching the first.
Print out the note-taking grid! Use it while watching the class videos to take notes. Make sure to watch the classes in order!
After Class 4, prepare a ~8 sentence paragraph using the information from the note-taking grid to detail which bacterial disease you believe is the 'worst'. After class 6, prepare a similar paragraph but on the 'worst' viral disease. After class seven, please turn in a 5 paragraph essay on the disease you chose as 'worst'. Recorded-only students will present to parent for grading.
Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.
Total classes: 7
Duration: 55 minutes per class
Prerequisite: High school biology is recommended but not required
Suggested grade level: 9th and above, advanced middle school students are welcome
Suggested credit: ¼ semester Science

Course description: Learn about some of the great and devastating diseases in history! Find out their molecular features, how they began and spread, and their impact on the world. Please note that this course will include a discussion on HIV/AIDS.

Viral pandemics
Class discussion on impacts
Course materials: note-taking supplies. Everything else is provided free by the instructor.
Homework: Students will prepare a brief (less than 3-minute) summary on which pandemic they believe had the greatest impact and why to present during Thursday’s class.

About Monica Brieier
Mrs. Monica Breier graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in biology, focusing on cellular and molecular genetics. She worked as a microbiologist and chemist after graduation but discovered laboratory work was not her vocation. Mrs. Breier pursued her teaching license because she had enjoyed her time as a teacher’s aide during college and loved teaching for several outdoor summer programs during and post-college. She has taught middle school science and math in Catholic schools for eight years since receiving her license. Mrs. Breier is married with two young children. The whole family is very active in youth ministry for the Denver Archdiocese as well as in their parish.
