Course Description:  Join this four-session course and learn the craft of writing royal characters, including kings, queens, princes and princesses, dukes and duchesses, and jesters! Characters of medieval royalty have been popular in fantasy fiction since their existence in our history – and there is a reason! In this course, we’ll explore the qualities of and fascination with characters of the courts. Using the elements of great storytelling, we’ll craft unique characters and learn how to create royalty that tugs at our hearts, stirs our anger, makes us laugh, and inspires us to live with honor and passion. With this short course, you’ll hone your creativity and improve your writing. This is a fun course that you’ll definitely enjoy!

Course Outline:

Class 1: What does writing royalty entail? Expectations of Royalty: The royalty of today vs. royalty in the past; how royalty has changed over the years

Class 2: Traditional Roles and titles – king/queen, prince/princess, duke/duchess, jester, cooks

Class 3: Military titles and writing with defensive forces

Class 4: Cultures of Royalty – European vs. Emperors/Asian countries v. African Tribal royalty

Materials

  • All materials are provided free by the instructor. All documents are turned in as Microsoft Word documents. If you do not own Microsoft Word 2007 or a later version, you can use a system such as Google Docs that converts to Word documents FREE.

Homework

Students will practice the concepts learned in class, with reading materials and resources between each class. One (1) to three (3) hours per class is expected for homework.
