Grade 3 Math (MEP) Part Two with Kris Correira
Recorded course taught by Kris Correira for Grade School Math
Summary

The British-based Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) is a comprehensive math program for grades K-12. This well-designed, integrated spiral program develops math fluency using a wide variety of activities that integrate concepts in such a way that students learn math by figuring out how to solve them.

Note that this course is open while it is under development-- enroll as usual and watch for more content to be posted each week!

You can read more about MEP in a blog post I wrote for HSC: https://homeschoolconnections.com/homeschool-mep-math/

Course Description: MEP has been adapted for US homeschoolers and the Homeschool Connections format. It includes complete lesson plans, a student book, and answer keys. The course does not have lectures; instead, math proficiency is acquired through doing and discussing various math activities. The teacher introduces and guides each activity as students find solutions as a class and individually.

MEP has four lessons each week. The live classes go through activities in the first lesson plan of the week except the three to five problems that also appear in the student practice book. Students complete the practice book problems as "homework" and the work reviewed by a parent, reviewing any difficulties.

Parents use the lesson plans to "teach" the activities in remaining three weekly lessons, and the student completes the practice book page for each lesson as "homework".

This class includes videos for ALL the lessons in the course recorded by Kris Correira!

Parents can decide how they want to incorporate this course into their math curriculum.

  1. Complete – parents who want to use MEP as the core math curriculum have the teacher complete the other 3 lesson plans each week. You become the “class” for some problems, so your child does not have to complete every answer to every situation, but enough to show mastery in the concept. Continue to assign the student book problems as homework. Grading for full participation is pass/fail based on attending 80% of classes, submitting at least 80% of corrected student work problems.

  2. Audit – feel free to sign your child up to participate just for math enhancement. No attendance or submitted work required, and no grade will be assigned. You will have full access to all the class and lesson videos.

Total classes

14

Duration

30 minutes

Prerequisites

Grade School Math 3 or 4 Part One

Suggested grade level

3rd or 4th grade - for students who have not done much multiplication and division.

Suggested credit

½ year of math

Outline

The course follows the MEP Year 3 weekly lesson plans.

Materials

  • All lesson plans can be downloaded from https://www.cimt.org.uk/projects/mepres/primary/index.htm

    Other materials

    ·         Colored pencils

    ·         Graph paper

I recommend you have math manipulatives available to help students visualize concepts. These can be purchased or homemade (see Start Here section of the course for downloads). Consider:

    ·         Counters of various colors

    ·         Place value bars (1s, 10s, 100s)

    ·         Fraction set

    ·         Congruent and similar basic geometric shapes (several tangram sets are helpful)

    ·         Lots of scrap paper or a chalk/dry-erase board

Homework

Parent and child together complete the remaining three 30-minute lessons each week. Students independently complete a single page of 3 to 5 math problems daily, one for each lesson, so four in total. Parents correct homework with students, guided by the prompts in the lesson plan, before submitting them. Exam preparation is not necessary as it is competency-based.
