Course Description: Through once a week class and daily practice videos, students will learn how to live the liturgical year with Mary through Roman Rite prayers and hymns in her honor. This course will cover five Marian hymns (history, pronunciation, meaning), the para-liturgical prayer of the Latin Rosary, and some surprising Advent reflections!

Join us as we weave the threads of devotion through daily practice and weekly classes, nurturing a lifelong love for the Blessed Mother.

One of the 12 classes will be a recorded class.

It is recommended that a parent sit in on the weekly live class to best assist students in making materials and doing memory work. A parent not available during the live class can watch the recording the next day.

Course Outline:

Week 1: The most ancient prayer to Mary: Sub Tuum Praesidium. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed.

Week 2: Review of last week. Prayers of the Rosary, Part 1: Ave Maria. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed.

Week 3: Review of last week. Prayers of the Rosary, Part 2: Signum Crucis and Gloria Patri. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed.

Week 4: First seasonal Hymn to Mary: Salve Regina. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed. We will also focus on the place of this prayer in the liturgical year.

Week 5: Review of last week. Prayers of the Rosary, Part 3: Pater Noster. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed. Assignment: Pray a Latin rosary with your family from memory!

Week 6: Review of last week. Prayers of the Rosary, Part 4: Credo (Part 1). Pronunciation and meaning will be discussed. Assignment: Pray a Latin rosary with your family from memory!

Week 7: Review of last week. Prayers of the Rosary, Part 5: Credo (Part 2). Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed.

Week 8:  Second seasonal Hymn to Mary: Alma Redemptoris Mater. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed. We will also focus on the place of this prayer in the liturgical year.

Week 9: Third seasonal Hymn to Mary: Ave Regina Caelorum. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed. We will also focus on the place of this prayer in the liturgical year.

Week 10: Fourth seasonal Hymn to Mary: Regina Caeli. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed. We will also focus on the place of this prayer in the liturgical year.

Week 11: Rosary bonus material: the titles of mysteries in Latin and the “O my Jesus” prayer. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed.

Week 12: the Latin O Antiphons of Advent. Pronunciation, meaning, and history will be discussed. Liturgical significance will also be a primary focus.

Materials

Course Materials: All course materials are provided FREE by the instructor. A working microphone is required for this course.

Homework

Students will be expected to spend 5-10 minutes per weekday on homework, memorizing the prayer or hymn of the week. In addition to class, recordings of the prayers and hymns for practicing purposes will be provided free by the instructor.

Fees

For all 12 classes: $152 if you register on or before July 15, $172 if you register after July 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Olivia Jones

Mrs. Olivia Jones graduated from Wyoming Catholic College where she spent four years studying Latin through immersion speaking and reading. She also participated and lead various weeklong Latin immersion camping trips in Utah and Wyoming, in which only Latin was spoken amongst the participants. In her experience, immersion is the absolute best way to learn a language.

After college, Mrs. Jones moved with her husband to Texas, where she has enjoyed sharing her love of Latin through both in person classes and online tutoring. Mrs. Jones is currently pursuing a certification in advanced Ecclesiastical Latin through the Veterum Sapientia Institute.

In her spare time, she enjoys studying bioethics, reading literature aloud with her husband, long hikes, thoughtful discussions, and poetry.
