Say farewell to math drills and hello to math skills! This spiral math program focuses on deep-level understanding and integrated concept practice so that your student can master math without lectures or boring homework. 

Course description: This course presents essential math concepts through a spiral curriculum that starts from what the student already knows and builds new concepts in a progression of small logical steps. 

Each week begins with the opening lesson for the week (30 minutes) during which the teacher introduces the math concept through teacher-led active learning. After class, students finish the lesson by working out 3-5 practice problems on their own. Detailed plans are provided for the three remaining lessons for the week, and parents will guide their students through the exercises using the instructions for each activity. 

This approach means that students should spend 45 minutes per day doing math for 4 days each week, including the live class time at the start of the week. Outside of this time, there is no additional homework, drills or memorization.

By the end of Part One and Part Two of this course, students should have mastered math concepts taught in 4th- or 5th-grade math curricula. Students will be able to:

• Understand and solve simple equations (add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers up to 10,000; add and subtract fractions; convert fractions to / from tenths and hundredths decimals; add and subtract decimal numbers using the column notation)

• Understand factors and multiples and express natural numbers in terms of their prime factors 

• Understand and use negative numbers on a number line and in context, e.g. thermometer, sea level; simple calculations of additions and subtractions with negative numbers

• Round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000

• Understand units of measurement, time, money, and temperature (use a 12- or 24-hour clock for time and speed; basic units of measurement)

• Use number sets and Venn diagrams to classify sets of numbers including negative numbers (ordering sets; compare sets) 

• Find the perimeter, area, and volume of simple shapes with lengths given as natural numbers, fractions or decimals

Parents need to review the "homework" together with students as guided by the prompts in the lesson plan.

The British-based Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) is a comprehensive math program for grades K-12. This well-designed, integrated spiral program develops math fluency using a wide variety of activities that integrate concepts in such a way that students learn math by figuring out how to solve them. British monetary symbols and spelling have been changed to US formats in the student books.
