Course Description: Give your third-grade student the most essential keys and skills to master beginning English and writing with this 12-week Language Arts course, especially designed for the homeschooling family! Here, your student learns significant ideas and practical how-tos that will develop a strong understanding of adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions – the foundational building blocks of language and writing. This instructional course explains how language works with weekly learning that includes defining, identifying, and using adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions; using each part of speech correctly and with excellence; and more!

Students learn through hands-on, sensory-based, easy-to-do, and straightforward activities that develop beginning-level creativity and critical thinking, making learning fun for both children and parents. Suggested grade level

Third (3rd) grade; however, 2nd - 4th grade elementary students are welcome.

Suggested credit

One-half (½) semester English and Writing. Take this course at the same time as the lab companion course, 3-2-Lab, Writing Lab (Composition): The Wonder of Writing with Describing (Adjectives, Adverbs, and Prepositions), also 12 Weeks. When combined with the 3-2-Lab course, this course is worth one (1) full semester’s credit for English & writing.

Class 1: What is an Adjective? Definition, introduction, and identification
Class 2: Adjectives in Everyday Life – home (chores, kitchen, family, bedtime) and clothing (shirt, sweater, jacket, socks, pants, boots)
Class 3: Adjectives in Social Studies & Community – jobs (doctor, teacher, farmer, firefighter)
Class 4: Adjectives in Nature & Science – farm (cow, sheep, goat, horse) and wild animals (mammal, reptile, habitat, fur, wings)
Class 5: What is an Adverb? Definition, introduction, and identification
Class 6: Adverbs in Everyday Life – learning (pencil, recess, homework, teacher) and community (police, library, grocery, neighbor)
Class 7: Adverbs in Social Studies and Community – geography (map, city, country, compass), states, and citizenship (honest, fair, rules, community)
Class 8: Adverbs in Nature & Science – plants (roots, stem, seed, leaf, types of plants) and Weather (storm, drizzle, sunny, cloudy, forecast)
Class 9: What is a Preposition? Definition, introduction, and identification
Class 10: Prepositions in Everyday Life – sports (baseball, soccer, football, tennis, swimming, and more) and musical instruments (orchestral, band)
Class 11: Prepositions in Social Studies and Community – continents and countries
Class 12: Prepositions in Nature & Science – the earth (land masses, beaches, and bodies of water) & space (rocks, soil, volcanoes, the moon)

Homework

 Each week, the class will have…

  • A “Bulletin Board” for parents with weekly information to guide your student

  • A “60-Second Snapshot” quick review of the previous week’s learning

  • “Direct Instruction Video(s)” to learn new concepts

  •  “Learning Center Activities,” with hands-on, sensory-based, easy-to-do and straightforward activities developing beginning-level creativity and critical thinking, including workbook pages, hands-on activity sheets, games, and listening-responding activities to help your student remember what they’re learning. NOTE: Each week, at least five simple, quick games will be provided (both independent and parent-led) to reinforce what is learned through fun, engaging time together.

  • A “Memory Quiz” with the parent to apply what was learned and show progress

  • “Resources” for further exploration, if desired

Please note! Parents will complete all work with the student. All content is laid out in a way that will be easy to follow and teach, with special instructions and tips for engaging with your student.

About Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA


Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA, is the creator and Director of the Aquinas Writing Advantage program. She is the author of 22 books (including Simplified Writing 101: Top Secrets for College Writing Success) and has been a professional author, editor, and university professor for over 30 years. Professor Brown has been coaching professional authors and writers worldwide, speaks at conferences and webinars often, and is a writing judge for multiple fiction writing/novel writing contests each year.

Professor Brown has been designing online writing courses for students of all ages since the 1990s and has designed the online writing program for three universities. She taught at two universities for 17 years (writing courses, interpersonal communication, management and leadership, and critical thinking). Professor Brown was also the General Education Communications curriculum development lead (writing, communications, critical thinking) for Western Governors University and served almost 20 years as a Senior Global Strategist in writing and as a marketing director.

Professor Brown has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing/Genre Fiction from Western Colorado University, a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Rehabilitation, and a Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Education from Western Michigan University. Professor Brown was a homeschooling parent for 34 years and homeschooled 10 children. She lives in Michigan and enjoys writing Science Fiction and Fantasy books in coffee shops, speaking online and at conferences, and walking her dogs.
