  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that week.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

  • You do not have to do essay questions unless you are signed up for Instructor Access.

Prerequisite: None, but "Life and Times of the Ancient Romans" for high school is recommended.

Suggested Grade Level: 9th to 12th grade

Suggested Credit: 1 semester Medieval or World History. For a full year, follow with The City of God: The High Middle Ages 732-1217 in the spring.

Course Description: "Age of Faith" will focus on the formative period of the Middle Ages, from the Edict of Milan to the defeat of the Muslim armies at Tours. Students will learn how the Roman Empire morphed into the kingdoms of medieval Europe, how the Catholic Church helped shape the development of these kingdoms, and about the most prominent men, women, and saints who shaped the culture.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1: The Christian Empire

  • Week 2: St. Augustine

  • Week 3: The Germanic States

  • Week 4: The Irish Missions

  • Week 5: Benedictine Moment

  • Week 6: The Merovingians

  • Week 7: Saxon England

  • Week 8: The Carolingians

  • Week 9: The Church in Germany

  • Week 10: Growth of the Papacy

  • Week 11: Mohammed

  • Week 12: The Muslim Eruption

Course Materials: Primary texts provided free online by the instructor.

Homework: Homework will consist of weekly readings and online quizzes (graded by the computer for immediate feedback), as well as occasional essay questions based on the readings. Estimated time commitment is 2-3 hours per week outside of class.

Phillip Campbell holds a BA in European History from Ave Maria University and a certificate in Secondary Education through Madonna University. He taught history and Scripture for the St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program for ten years and is the author of the popular ” Story of Civilization” series by TAN Books. Mr. Campbell has also been published by The Catholic Textbook Project, Ave Maria Press, Our Sunday Visitor, Arx Publishing, and Arouca Press and his articles have appeared in online and print journals such as the St. Austin Review, New Oxford Review, and New Liturgical Movement.
