Grow Your Imagination through Poetry with Cate Godlewsky
Recorded course taught by Cate Godlewsky for Grade School Poetry Literature
Summary

Do you want to expand your imagination, improve your memory, and have a fun time learning and performing poems? Then this class, which reviews four poems from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic A Child’s Garden of Verses, is for you!

Course Description: This course will introduce students to the wonderful world of poetry, focusing on how poems operate (introducing rhythm and rhyme) and how to read poems using your imagination. Every class, students will be introduced to a new poem by Robert Louis Stevenson and practice a different set of reading skills. Students will also practice handwriting skills by copying out a poem, work on their art skills by illustrating poems, learn new vocabulary words through careful reading and context clues, and memorize and perform at least one poem for their family. Students will also have an opportunity to try writing a poem at the end of the course!

Instructor: Catherine Godlewsky

Special notes

Note to Parents: Due to the young ages of grade school students, we expect that you will accompany your child at all times while he or she is online, which includes watching recorded classes alongside your student. This will also help you assist your student with homework where necessary or help your student contact the teacher with questions. Thank you for your support!

Materials

  • Any copy of A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is available in many places online free, but we recommend finding a physical copy with beautiful illustrations to help the student imagine the poems.

Homework

After each class, the student will need to complete a poem review and activity, likely with parent assistance. This should take about an hour after each class, but one class also asks students to memorize and perform a poem for their family, so this will likely take more time depending on the student’s memorization speed.
