LAB for Chemistry, Part Two with Kathy Dutton (Eligible for College Credit)
Live course taught by Kathy Dutton, Anthony Rheaume (TA for Kathy Dutton) for Spring 2025 High School Chemistry
Summary

Join this optional college-prep Lab offered as a companion to the LIVE class. The Lab covers Freezing Point Depression, Electrical Conductivity, Analysis of a Hydrate, Mole Ratios, and various types of reactions, including Decomposition Reactions, Double Replacement Reactions, Acid-Base Reactions, and Redox Reactions.

Special Notes:  You must be registered for Chemistry, Part Two (LIVE) to register for the lab component. All labs will have a pre-recorded video (found on the class page) that includes an introduction to the lab, and guidance through the lab and the lab report.  Labs will be touched on during class. NOTE: there is no live meet up time for Lab. You will have Lab access within the Chemistry course itself.

NOTE: Parts One and Two of this course are part of the Franciscan University Advantage Program for dual enrollment. They align with Franciscan's CHM 110 and CHM 115 (lab) for 4 college credits. For more information on the optional dual enrollment program and to see if your student is eligible, visit https://homeschoolconnections.com/resources/college-credit/

Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in Chemistry, Part Two

Instructor: Kathy Dutton

Course Description: We will do approximately seven labs throughout the semester. As closely as possible, the topics covered in the lab will correlate with and support what we are discussing in class.

Course Outline:  Topics covered include Electrical Conductivity of Solutions, Freezing Point Depression, Analysis of a Hydrate, Mole Ratios, and various types of reactions including Decomposition Reactions, Double Replacement Reactions, Acid-Base Reactions, and Redox Reactions

Course Materials and Technology:

1. MicroChem – Homeschool Connections Custom Kit, Quality Science Labs,  http://www.qualitysciencelabs.com/homeschool-connections/

NOTE: This kit is mandatory. Order early as they are very busy in the Fall and the delivery time can be quite long.

2.  Scientific Calculator (I demo on a TI-30x iis)

3. Scanner or smartphone with CamScanner (or like) app that can scan multiple pages and save as a single PDF file.

Homework: There will be about seven labs spread over the semester; each lab (including the lab report) should take about 3 hours to complete; some will take more time and others will take less. Mrs. Dutton will be available to answer questions daily via the class discussion (forum). Mrs. Dutton will grade all completed assignments and give an overall grade for the lab.

Fee: For all LAB lessons: $67 if you register on or before November 15, $87 after Nov. 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Kathy Dutton

I hold both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, specializing in Biochemistry, and a BA in Accounting from the University of Michigan. My early career involved research, including work with catalytic converters, neurology, and immunology. I have about 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience across various venues, including university teaching, private tutoring, homeschool co-op classes, and public and Catholic schools.

I am (unsuccessfully) attempting semi-retirement. (I love HSC too much to fully retire!) In 2023, I and my husband, Dave, sponsored (brought) a Ukrainian refugee family to the US. - Mom, Dad, and 3 children. This included renovating part of our home to be an apartment for them and providing all they needed to integrate into American life. They have been a great blessing for US!!!

Additionally, I spend time volunteering at my local Catholic Church. And I sit on the Board of Directors for the Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair, an International Science and Engineering Fair associated fair. One day, I hope to learn how to make pottery.

In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and reading (mostly technical stuff). Dave & I both enjoy arts (often buying) and hiking, and we LOVE to travel!!! Our favorite parts of travel are getting to know the locals and their culture (especially the food), checking out the local arts, and hiking.

Dave & I raised three children, who are now far-flung across the western US. We currently live in mid-Michigan with the Ukrainian family we sponsored, and our two cats - Ella (the Princess) and Pierre (the Brute).
