Summary

 Join our online book club for an illuminating journey that will get children excited about literature. Students will deep dive into the enchanting realm of Greek mythology. In our ten club meetings, we will explore timeless tales of heroes and moral quandaries, scrutinizing them through our Catholic lens to unravel the profound impact these myths continue to exert on our world today. Join us on this intellectual and spiritual odyssey, fostering a deeper understanding of Greek mythology while aligning it with timeless Biblical Truths.

 

Special Notes: In this fun book club, you will enjoy enriching discussions with no grading.

Total Club Meetings: 10

Meeting Dates: Monday through Thursday, January 13-16, 20-23, and 27-28, 2025.

Starting Time: 7:00 PM Eastern (6:00 Central; 5:00 Mountain; 4:00 Pacific)

Duration Per Meeting: 45 minutes

Prerequisite: None

Suggested Grade Level: 7th to 8th grade. Interested high school students are welcome.

Suggested Credit: ¾ semester of English or Literature.

Course Description: In this book club, students will gain a deeper understanding of Greek mythology and its influence on the Western World. Students will be encouraged both to read the stories and to think critically about them. We will focus on mastery of content as well as how the morals of the stories compare with Biblical Truths. We will explore the idea of heroes and heroines, right and wrong, fate, and the standards the Greeks upheld. Greek Mythology reveals the innate questions that rest in all human souls: Where did we come from? What is our purpose?  Throughout this course, we will analyze the stories through a Biblical worldview. Students will discover how these myths still impact and influence our world today!

Class 2: Zeus and Hera
Class 3: Hephaestus – Poseidon
Class 4: Apollo – Dionysus
Class 5: Minor Gods - Deucalion 
Class 6: The Apples of Love and the Apple of Discord
Class 7: Theseus 

Class 8: Oedipus 
Class 9 - The Golden Fleece
Class 10 - Heracles

Homework: Book club members can expect to spend up to 30 minutes a day reading the assigned materials in preparation for our enriching group discussions.

Fee: For all 10 classes: $57 if you register on or before November 15. $77 if you register after Nov. 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Emily Henry

Emily Henry is an alumna of Hillsdale College and teaches Latin and literature.

Over the last decade, she has built a thriving, successful online Latin program for homeschooling families. Mrs. Henry’s goal is to make Latin accessible for students of all backgrounds, whether they have had prior experience with the language or are beginners.

Her approach to teaching Latin is unique because it blends the best of both immersion-based learning and rote memorization. This method of instruction has led to her online program winning the 2024 Practical Homeschooling i-Learn Award for Latin. Studying Latin with Mrs. Henry will enhance students’ ability to think critically, problem-solve, and become proficient in both Latin and Literature.
