Course description: Nuclear and atomic power has long been known as a potent source of energy with interesting properties. However, over the course of learning about these properties and harnessing this energy, a host of  fascinating mistakes and accidents have occurred. This course traces a brief history of mankind’s relationship with nuclear and atomic power, giving special attention to the accidents which have occurred, including Three-Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima.

Course outline:

Class 1: Introduction and overview of syllabus and assignments
Class 2: “We Discover Fire”
Class 3: “Danger Beyond Comprehension”
Class 4: Fascinating Goof-Ups
Class 5: Windscale and Kyshtym
Class 6: The Military, and Three-Mile Island
Class 7: Chernobyl
Class 8: Fukushima

Course materials: None required.

Homework: Daily, optional review quizzes based on classroom lectures and discussions, worth bonus points. Students will compose a 2-3 page exercise in analyzing a historical event in nuclear history. NOTE: Middle school students will instead write a 1-2 page critical analysis of the select reading.

Dr. Martin teaches history and theology for Homeschool Connections, and serves as an Adjunct Professor of History at both Southern New Hampshire University and Antelope Valley College. He holds BA degrees in History and Theology from Christendom College (2007); an MA in History from National University (2012); and a Ph.D. in History from CGU (2018). Dr. Martin's research interests include the Lost Cause, the Federalists & Anti-Federalists, and the Impact of Wars and Depressions Upon the American Social Mind. He lives in California, with his wife and three sons.
