How to get the most out of Microsoft Excel with Domenico Ruggiero:

  • Attentively listen to the class lectures and replay portions to clarify/solidify topics that may benefit from repeated hearings.

  • Have your spreadsheet application up and running before the start of class -- each lecture contains exercises to be performed during the lecture.

  • Complete the given assignments and practice working with the spreadsheets on items of personal interest

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Prerequisite: Students will need to have the Microsoft Excel application installed on their computer.  Excel for Windows is covered in the course. Students using Excel for Mac will still benefit from the course, but the user interface may be different at times.

Suggested Grade Level: 7th to 12th grade

Suggested Credit: 1/2 semester Computer Skills or Excel

Course Description:

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application and one of the core components of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.  It is capable of handling simple to advanced calculations, contains various graphing tools, provides pivot tables for data discovery, and utilizes Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming. (The topic of VBA programming is studied more deeply in Mr. Ruggiero’s “Microsoft Office Automated Productivity with VBA Programming course” available in Unlimited Access.)

This course focuses on the most utilized functions and capabilities within Excel to perform numerical analysis.  Students completing this course will emerge with a firm understanding of the essential elements of Excel which is necessary for anybody that wishes to demonstrate proficiency in computer skills.

 

Course Outline:

Topics are subject to slight change.  These topics will be covered in an interspersed manner throughout the course.

• Getting to know the Excel Interface

• Understanding cell references – Relative, Absolute, and Named Ranges

• Data types and Format options

• Entering formulas -- simple to complex

• Logic conditions (if-this-then-that)

• Goal seeking

• Pivot Tables

• Data Visualization: Charts and Graphs

• Avoiding pitfalls and evaluating equations

 

Course Materials:

Microsoft Excel application must be installed on the student’s computer. Excel for Windows is covered in the course. Students using Excel for Mac will still benefit from the course, but the user interface may be different at times.

The instructor will provide all other necessary materials free to students. Recommendations for other resources will be provided with no obligation to purchase.

Homework: Workbook submissions will be associated with lecture topics. A final workbook submission will be a comprehensive review of course material and a final exam will ask supplemental questions.

About Domenico Ruggiero

Domenico Ruggiero holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Florida and a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering – Engineering Management from the University of Central Florida. 

About Domenico Ruggiero

For most of his professional career, Domenico has worked at or near the NASA Kennedy Space Center. He has worked on the Space Shuttle Program as an Orbiter Structures Engineer for United Space Alliance. Currently, he works for a large government consulting firm where he has held many roles including Systems Engineer on the NASA Constellation Program and the NASA Commercial Crew Transportation Systems Program. More recently, Mr. Ruggiero works as a data analyst & productivity automation expert for a variety of government agencies.
