Outline

Course description: The human body is filled with intricate systems all working in unison. If any one of these systems fails, we risk death. How does our incredible body work? This introductory-level course provides a survey of the human body systems so that students will gain in-depth knowledge of the systems of the body. Homeostatic balance, the relationship between structure and function, and the interrelationships between body systems are a focus throughout the course. There will be optional dissections for the students to do / watch before classes, which will be discussed in class.

Course outline:

Class 1: Integumentary System
Class 2: Nervous System
Class 3: Special Senses
Class 4: Respiratory System
Class 5: Urinary System
Class 6:  Review for Midterm
Class 7: Endocrine System
Class 8: Reproductive System
Class 9: Pregnancy and Life
Class 10: The Human Soul
Class 11: Animal Dissection
Class 12: Review for Final

Materials

  • Anatomy and Physiology: The Easy Way, 2nd Edition, by Edward Alcamo, ISBN: 978-0764119798 (https://amzn.to/3KhnDP9)

  • Note: The section of this book on the human reproductive system we will not be using; instead the instructor will be giving handouts. The chapters on these systems (Chapter 22&23) have anatomical drawings of the human reproductive system in case a parent would like to remove that part of the book before giving it to the student.

Homework

Each week, students will be required to read a selection from the textbook, take a short quiz, and every few classes watch or perform a simple dissection on their own.
