Register for this fun course to build a love for future Latin studies. We’ll embark on a captivating journey through ancient Rome as well as delve into the world of Latin through interactive activities and assignments, mastering basic speaking and reading skills. Join us as we explore Ecclesiastical pronunciations and unveil the wonders of the Latin language and culture, guiding young minds toward linguistic excellence and historical appreciation.
Special Notes:It is recommended that a parent sit in on the weekly live class to best assist students in making materials and doing memory work. A parent not available during the live class can watch the recording the next day.
This is Part One of a two-part course. Students are expected to also register for Part Two offered in the Spring semester.

Course Description: Students will be introduced to basic Latin speaking and reading skills through fun activities and homework assignments. By the end of the semester, students will be able to read a short Latin passage about the Map of the Roman Empire, answer simple comprehension questions in Latin, and sustain a 5-minute practiced conversation. This course will prepare students for beginning middle school Latin with any Latin curriculum. We will explore mainly Ecclesiastical pronunciations.

Week 3: Map of the Roman Empire: Vocabulary
Week 4: Map of the Roman Empire: Genders of nouns
Week 5: Map of the Roman Empire: Ubi est?
Week 6: Review
Week 7: Map of the Roman Empire: Singular vs. Plural, Part 1 (Fem.)
Week 8: Map of the Roman Empire: Singular vs. Plural, Part 2 (Masc.)
Week 9: Map of the Roman Empire: Singular vs. Plural, Part 3 (Neut.)
Week 10: More Conversational Latin and How to play Simon Says
Week 11: Numeri et Litterae (Numbers and Letters)
Week 12: Practice Latin Interview, Final Exam: reading a short text in Latin
Course Materials: Course materials: Lingua Latina Book 1: Familia Romana by Hans Orberg, ISBN 13: 9781585104208. This book is used for multiple years of grade school Latin and need only be purchased once. Students may purchase a used copy through bookfinder.com.
A working microphone is required for this course. Starting on the first day of class, 60 blank flashcards for vocabulary words and terms must be available to the student. Some means of taking pictures of flashcards and uploading them to the course page will be required (this can be as simple as using a mobile phone). A downloadable map will be provided free by the instructor.
Homework: Students will be expected to spend 10-15 minutes every school day either making or studying vocabulary flashcards. Example flashcards and pronunciation videos will be provided by the instructor. Additionally, students will teach and practice basic conversational skills with parents (or knowledgeable siblings) and complete one review assignment for an average of 30 minutes once per week before class. Once per semester, students will submit a creative project.
Fee: For all 12 classes: $177 if you register on or before July 15, $197 if you register after July 15. (Registration closes one week before the first day of class. After that date, registrations are not guaranteed. There is a $20 surcharge for late enrollments after the course is closed.)

About Olivia Jones
Mrs. Olivia Jones graduated from Wyoming Catholic College where she spent four years studying Latin through immersion speaking and reading. She also participated and lead various weeklong Latin immersion camping trips in Utah and Wyoming, in which only Latin was spoken amongst the participants. In her experience, immersion is the absolute best way to learn a language.
After college, Mrs. Jones moved with her husband to Texas, where she has enjoyed sharing her love of Latin through both in person classes and online tutoring. Mrs. Jones is currently pursuing a certification in advanced Ecclesiastical Latin through the Veterum Sapientia Institute.
In her spare time, she enjoys studying bioethics, reading literature aloud with her husband, long hikes, thoughtful discussions, and poetry.
