NOTE: This course is currently not available in Caravel as a recorded course. Please fill out this form to be enrolled in the same or equivalent Moodle course.
We will get back to you in three business days. Thank you for your patience. This is only a temporary solution until this course is available in Caravel.
Continue learning Physical Science this year with this deep dive into the matter, atomic energy, and more. You will be well prepared for Chemistry and Physics after taking this course. Follow up with Inspiration, Invention, Innovation in the spring semester.
How to get the most out of Physical Science, Part Three with Kathy Dutton:
View, and take notes on, the Lecture Videos before the Recorded Class.
Bring to every Recorded Class: a notebook (to take notes), something to write with, a calculator, your textbook, and the willingness to participate (do the problems just as if it was a live class and you had to answer) and learn.
Do the assignments, quizzes, and tests; in that order.
Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.
Special notes: This is a 3-part course. Part One is a prerequisite for both Part Two and Part Three. There are 17 pre-recorded lecture videos in addition to the 13 live classes.
Total classes: 13
Duration: 50 minutes
Prerequisite: 8th-grade math, previously or concurrently
Suggested grade level: 8th to 10th grade
Suggested credit: One full semester of Physical Science
This is a 3-part course; for a total of 1.5 middle school science credits. Ideally, high school students would complete all three parts for one year of high school science credit.
Instructor: Kathy Dutton
Course description: This is a ‘flipped’ class. Students will be required to watch the recorded lecture before coming to the live class. The live class will be in a discussion (question and answer) format based on the lecture.
We will be studying the matter and forces that God used to create our universe. Completion of this course (parts 1, 2, & 3) will be excellent preparation for high school Chemistry and Physics.

About Kathy Dutton
I hold both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, specializing in Biochemistry, and a BA in Accounting from the University of Michigan. My early career involved research, including work with catalytic converters, neurology, and immunology. I have about 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience across various venues, including university teaching, private tutoring, homeschool co-op classes, and public and Catholic schools.
I am (unsuccessfully) attempting semi-retirement. (I love HSC too much to fully retire!) In 2023, I and my husband, Dave, sponsored (brought) a Ukrainian refugee family to the US. - Mom, Dad, and 3 children. This included renovating part of our home to be an apartment for them and providing all they needed to integrate into American life. They have been a great blessing for US!!!
Additionally, I spend time volunteering at my local Catholic Church. And I sit on the Board of Directors for the Flint Regional Science and Engineering Fair, an International Science and Engineering Fair associated fair. One day, I hope to learn how to make pottery.
In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and reading (mostly technical stuff). Dave & I both enjoy arts (often buying) and hiking, and we LOVE to travel!!! Our favorite parts of travel are getting to know the locals and their culture (especially the food), checking out the local arts, and hiking.
Dave & I raised three children, who are now far-flung across the western US. We currently live in mid-Michigan with the Ukrainian family we sponsored, and our two cats - Ella (the Princess) and Pierre (the Brute).
